What PC programs are we going to use and/or need? For CS and CSE majors.

What programs are we going to use when we take CS and EE courses in the Engineering College? Like Visual Studios 2008 or something like that?

Any programs that are just good to have? What programs do they provide us with?

What programs can I install now? What programs should I not install and await for class instructions?

Thanks a bunch in advance.

Visual Studio 2008 and then in Spring (for CS33) some sort of MIPS assembler.

You can install Visual Studio 2008, you’ll definitely be using that. Wait on the MIPS assembler because the professor gives you the link to it and it could change by the time you get into the class

All of this is free

i used visual C++ for cs31, i didn’t partition that much harddrive space for windows xp so didn’t install the whole visual studios but they are all free, you can download from seasnet once you come to school and register with them, they’ll give you a login for all that stuff

is visual studios 2008 the professional version or the free version anyone can download free online (express i think it’s called)?

you’ll get a pretty full featured version, I forget which one you get. Otherwise, there’s other ways you can get MSDNAA access for cheap.

visual c++ i just downloaded the free one but i think the visual studios hsseas give us is a paid version

where do I download visual studios or visual c++? a UCLA site? link? thx

for VC: [Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition](<a href=“Visual Studio: IDE and Code Editor for Software Developers and Teams”>Visual Studio: IDE and Code Editor for Software Developers and Teams)

i got visual studios through the seasnet download, i think you need an account to access that

isn’t that overkill for what you will be doing?

Yeah, pretty overkill, but since they’re using it to grade, you might as well use the same.

Then for CS35L you’ll probably have to install a Linux distribution (Ubuntu) for the lab.
