I was especially wondering about students with financial need and international students. Thanks in advance!
This will be an indirect answer. I do not know the stats for the leadership seminar as a “feeder” for Notre Dame. My cynical mind says that its a chance for students to experience Notre Dame and for ND to make some money.
This falls into the category of “is there anything I can do to get an edge?” My DS, who is now a Junior, did not have ND on his radar at all. His due diligence was checking his top schools and running the NPC to see what the “budget” would look like. He had some interesting criteria for a school - top rated B-school, big enough sports program to have a marching band, good enough sports that he would get to march in cool places (Rose Bowl, Disney, etc.). He had already applied to Ross at Michigan. So, there is ND not too far away. On a whim, he ran the NPC and discovered it was one of the least expensive options based on our financial status! Who knew?!?
When it came down to application time, I think what sealed the deal for him was the essay on the Five Pillars of a Holy Cross Education. He was in the regular admission cycle, so the odds were against him. He had never expressed any interest in the past. Another strike. But, the boy can write and has a deep sense of Faith (we are not Catholic). I am convinced that is what tipped in his favor.
So, what can help you get into Notre Dame. A solid academic record and a well-thought out essay on the Five Pillars. My 2 cents.
I think my son wrote an excellent essay on God and the good life - about how he was diagnosed with an incurable medical condition and how it changed his life. Gotta love those unique essays!
My eldest daughter attended ND Leadership Seminar 3 summers ago as a junior. It is a fully-funded program, including airfare even for international students, which indicates you are the type of student ND is very interested in.
Of the students in my daughter’s group, I remember all except 1 who applied were admitted and a couple were ultimately chosen as merit scholars. So the chances are very high of being accepted.
In the end, I think 3 of the 10 or so of the admitted NDLS alum chose to attend Notre Dame. The rest, including my daughter, enrolled at other highly selective colleges.
How many kids participate in the Leadership Seminar program?
120 I believe
Thank you!
The year my daughter attended, there were 3 different groups of approx. 40 students each. She kept in touch with about 15 or so and of those that applied to ND, the far majority were accepted.
Update now that REA results are in….about 7 or 8 kids from my student’s core group of 12 applied REA. All but one was accepted. I think a few more of might apply RD.
Hi there! Anyone from here that their son or daughter applied to the leadership seminar for this summer 2022? I know its very hard to get accepted as they only take 120 kids. Just curious. My son is a Junior and ND is his first choice so he is hoping if he gets into this seminar for the summer that will increase his chances to get accepted next year. I also have a senior that applied this year regular decision. Anyone else?
I hear it changes with each year. If you look on older threads, there are many students who did Leadership and were not accepted. The program self selects for high achievers. Our student’s group had a good REA this year.
My son attended Leadership Seminar in July of 2018. He’s now a junior at ND/Mendoza. Agree with most of the comments above, except for the one that seems to confuse NDLS (fully-funded by ND) with the Summer Scholars (pay to play) program. With very few exceptions, the NDLS kids who apply to ND are accepted. In my son’s year (and in most, I suspect) many applied to other highly-selective schools. Overall, only about 10% of the 2018 NDLS kids enrolled at ND.
Anyones’ child got waitlisted for the ND leadership seminar for 2022? What does that mean? What are the chances that he will get accepted?
hi,
wondering what your child thought of the program. my child is currently there. just day 2. where did your child decide instead? any reason why not Notre Dame? Thanks in advance
I am sorry for the late reply! My daughter loved the program and her cohort of classmates, thought the campus was gorgeous, the two professors inspiring, etc. It was definitely a top contender but ultimately chose Brown.
How did your child enjoy their summer with NDLS? Will they be applying this fall?
How about students who attended NDLS but did not apply EA? Did they get in RD, or is do only early applicants get a bump from having participated in NDLS?
