For columbia college regular decision, approxmaetely 16,000 students apply annualy and 2,000 get accepted. Out of those 16,000 students how many are really competitive. And by competitive I mean have some or all of the following criteria:
2000+ SAT scores or 30+ ACT
700+ SAT IIs
90+ gpa
Average amount of clubs and extras.

Are there a lot of students who just apply to columbia just for the hell of it. I mean like they know they have absolutely no chance but they still apply because there may be a slight chance they will get in. Basically my question breaks down into three parts?
Percentage who apply are really qualified?
Percentage who apply are qualified?
Percentage who apply are just below the qualifying level?
Percentage who apply are extremely low and have slim chance of getting in?

So far, everyone I've known that even thought about Columbia has those stats. I mean, maybe some 600's here or there for SAT's, but for the most part, I haven't actually met anyone applying to an Ivy "just for the hell of it".

You don't know anyone applying to Ivies for the hell of it? That kind of confuses me, because just about everyone I know who is competitive, or even semi-competitive for Ivy-level schools is applying to most, if not all of the Ivies. But not early!!!!

A lot are. I've interviewed several kids with SATs in the 1000-1100 range (/1600).

Really? At my school, even the kids that have the grades tend to shy away from Ivies. Minus Cornell. We love Cornell apparently. We get like 5 or 6 people going there each year (from like a class of 200-250)

On the bright side that makes me feel a little better about my chances haha...
