What Percentage in ED Rounds

Hi Everyone! Quick question: What percentage of the final class size is filled in JHU’s early rounds? With two rounds of ED, I’m just wondering are their many spots left for kids who apply RD?

Thanks!

  • For the class of 2024, 682 students were offered admission in ED.* In RD, 1,922 students were accepted from an applicant pool of 27,256.**

  • In August 2020, 1,300 first-year students matriculated at Hopkins, compared to 1,363 in August 2019.*** So 1300 minus 682 equals 618 matriculants from the RD pool, putting the most recent cycle’s yield at about 32 percent (618/1,922). Due to the pandemic, I suspect some students admitted into the class of 2024 chose to defer their matriculation to 2021, so these calculations are definitely subject to some margin of error.

  • If 600-700 students are admitted ED, and the average first-year class is 1300-1400 students, then we should expect around 50 percent of each class to be admitted ED. Anecdotally, as an undergrad at Hopkins, one out of two people feels about right. Also, I heard from a professor that yield was higher this last cycle than in previous years, which may influence how many students admissions accepts in this cycle.

  • For class of 2025 ED, 520 students were accepted.**** EDII is brand new so I really have no basis to speculate, but here are some things to consider: 1. Students who were deferred/denied admission REA to HYPS are now free to apply EDII wherever (I don’t know this for certain, but it would seem reasonable that Hopkins EDII would attract a competitive crowd of applicants) 2. You could look into the admissions of similar schools with ED I & II — off the top of my head, Chicago and Vanderbilt — but I wouldn’t vest too much in such comparisons.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful, well-articulated reply…much appreciated!!

I agree with you that EDII looks to be a competitive round for sure. It’s amazing to think how many kids are throwing their hats into the ED round at schools around the country that they’ve possibly never seen due to covid travel restrictions.

It’s a crazy year; that’s for sure!!

Thanks again!

@DoingOurBest I would agree with students apply ED without having visited. EA/REA I could understand. D21 was able to visit prior to 11th grade during a school trip and I thought for sure she would only “probably” like Georgetown. Out of the 10 schools they visited (they travelled from Penn to Columbia) she ONLY like JHU. Actually fell in love.

Same thing happened with schools here in California. She thought she would like them viewing them online but once we visited the campus/surrounding area MANY were a No Go!

Yes, we weren’t able to make a campus visit before Covid hit so we are hesitant to have my DS apply ED sight unseen. In a regular year we’d hop in the car and make the 7 hour drive to check it out, but it wasn’t in the cards this year. Decisions, decisions!!
