If you had the choice to go to any public university in the country for lets say instate tuition (plus given aid if needed) which one would you want to go to and why?

UVA. Reason? It's my favourite public :); everything about it seems to click

Another vote for UVa. I love the state, I love Charlottesville, the weather's great, the school's history is both interesting and impressive, student & faculty quality is high, the size feels right....

It just depends on who you are and what you want out of a college.

UVA is a great place in many ways, but it's not for everyone. It has a very "thick" culture that many find absolutely wonderful and others find constraining. It is one of the few flagship universities that still seems to care much about undergrad education, and that's definitely in its favor. I love the place, but not everyone would.

For instance, for a kid who's not really into the party scene and wants a quieter, more intellectual experience, I might suggest William and Mary. For someone who wants a big party scene, a HUGE school, a big football focus, and cold weather, I might suggest Michigan. And then there's Berkeley, which has one of the best faculties on the planet and Bay-area weather. The SUNYs tend to be distinctive. If you love nature, beautiful scenery, and walking to class through a forest on bridges over small canyons, UC Santa Cruz might be best for you.

It's all in what you want.

UVa, UNC, and Michigan are my favorites.

Surprised noone's mentioned UCB yet.

Mmm. Thought I did.

For quality of undergraduate education: William & Mary
For the overall undergraduate experience: Wisconsin-Madison

Woops. Must've missed your post.

A few years ago, the Wall Street Journal ranked colleges and universities for their ability to "feed" undergraduates into top professional schools. Only four state schools made the Top 50 list:

University of Michigan

New College of Florida

University of Virginia

University of California - Berkeley

New College isn't for everyone, but it deserves more recognition than it gets at collegeconfidential (which is practically none). Although it is quite small, and is short on reputation and history, it compares favorably with the top state universities in the country in terms of selectivity, undergraduate focus, and graduate placement.

BERKELEY!

Oh wait, I went there already. ;)

Michigan, Wisconsin, UNC, U Colorado-Boulder, UT-Austin would be top choices for me as well.

I love UVA I think everything clicks about it too.

UCB, UCLA, Michigan

University of Florida without a doubt. I'd be fine with UVA, UNC, UCLA, Texas, UWash or Michigan though :D

bumping to save my thread

Ohio University
Miami University (Ohio)
Washington State University
Michigan State University
Kansas University
U of California-San Diego
Indiana University-Bloomington

UC Santa Barbara. You can surf between classes.

I'm old...but I would want my kids to go to UC Santa Barbara; everyone should get to live in SB for four years!!!!!

Michigan, Berkeley, and Wisconsin-Madison are my favs

Vermont or Utah, if you like to ski.
