What qualifies a course as honors?

I was wondering what makes a course honors when home schooling( not AP)?

Any impute would help.

I don’t list any courses as honors on my kids’ transcripts as I think the honors designation is only meaningful in a traditional school setting when there is more than one level of the course that a student can choose to take.

I do label my kids’ courses as honors bc far too many schools are now using Self-Reporting Academic Record (SRAR) software. I’m pretty sure that the software generates a number based on the input data of courses, grades, and test scores. Not labeling them honors might mean the application is never given a thorough review.

I base the designation based on both level of input and output. If they are using all college level resources for studying a subject and are producing equivalent levels of written work, I have no qualms giving the designation honors. If the course is based on your avg high school textbook and the output is not beyond that avg level, it Is not labeled honors.

The classes I label honors have more work than the AP courses he has taken.
For example he did TWO bio and chem courses using the same text, He then took BOTH exams and did all the study questions and exercises each professor assigned. One was a book program and the other an online video course.
So obviously many more hours than 120 for a regular course. These were also lab courses. Bio he did 4 dissections with a college prof.
