I've got my HPME interview coming up, and I'm getting nervous about it. What medical knowledge do they need you to know? How important is it? Are they going to test my chemistry/bio/math?

I'd be very grateful if anyone who's done a med interview could clue me in.

Sorry I can't respond to your questions, but -
Is this the Miami program? When did you hear about the interview? When is the interview (hoping they're scheudled for a date/time when the airfares won't be TOO high)?
I just got the EA packet a few days ago and am waiting to hear about the interview.
I did hear that out of about 220 applicants, they interview 100 or so, and choose 20.
thanks

I'm a junior, so I haven't applied yet, but I have a cousin who is having interviews for all the progs he applied to these days, and he's told me quite a bit about them. So...

The interviewer(s) will not be doing any testing to see if your bio/chem/math skills are up to the mark - that's what the SATIIs, SATs and school report card is for. So don't worry about that.

They focus a lot on YOU. They'll ask you the usual questions, like why you want to do this, what inspired you... but some interviewers like to get really deep and ask things like "What part of your personality will you put to most use in your stay in medical school..."

Also, you should have a general idea of the issues that are prevalent in medicine, and you should also be clear about what your opinion is on those issues is, and why...

You also asked how important the interview is. The fact that you have reached the interview stage means that your marks and stats are good, and the school is interested in you. For a lot of these progs, it is often the performance in the interview that helps the adcomms make the final decision. But there's really no need to fret over it - it's just a friendly conversation with someone who is interested in you. You have to remember, the schools are looking for a reason to take you, not hunting for reasons to not take you...

that is a GREAT site - thanks so much for letting us know about it (in addition to lots of other info, you can look up interview questions by school)
