I’m meeting with an admissions officer at the University of Minnesota on January 8th. I’m not sure what questions I should ask.
I know I’ll ask about financial aid/assistance, but I’m not sure what to ask about it. Campus lifestyle is important to me, and I’ll get to that. Is it in poor taste to ask what my chances are of getting in?
Ask admissions if there are any changes anticipated over the next 4 years that would impact you as a student - new initiatives, new facilities, new programs?
Chances are the admission person will refer you to financial aid for your FA questions since that’s not their area of expertise - although he/she can probably handle some general questions.
Asking about your chances may not elicit much useful information that you can’t get for yourself. Google the Common Data Set for University of Minnesota, scroll down to Section C and check out how your stats compare to the admitted students from last year. You can see is you are in their ‘sweet spot.’
One other tip: If this is your first choice, you can say that. “If I’m admitted, I will come.” (Or the variation with the FA hedge, “If I’m admitted, and I can afford it, I will come.”)
