Hi, I'm preparing stuff to bring to my double room in Foothill, but I have never been to the dorms. Are there air conditioners in the dorms? How wide are the beds? Does it get very cold at night? Thanks!!

no air conditioners. beds are XL twins. In the winter it will get cold, but you have a heater (i think it's a radiator). You also get a desk, chair, closet, and drawers.

this might help http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/Move_in_2007/my_room_sun.html

What about bringing a fan, at least for the end of August & September? Necessary or not?

ehhhh i don't think you need a fan at all. bay area is almost always cool. even in the summer it's still not really hot

No air conditioner!?!?! I have been suffering in the SoCal heat the last few days. Does it get hot at night in Berkeley during the summer? I can’t sleep when it’s hot :(. During the winter, do the units have heaters to keep the rooms warm?

Berkeley is in NorCal, much different climate. Yes they have heaters/radiators as Smallz said. There’s always the bay breeze to cool you off, rarely will you be hot. Actually i’d venture to say you won’t be hot.

You might want to bring a fan - dorm rooms can get warm, especially if you have a room that faces west.

Most apartments around Berkeley don’t have AC either. It’s not really necessary.

I would recommend against a fan. There is a reason Mark Twain said, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” I’m in Berkeley right now and there has not been a single day that has called for me to use a fan. There have been many days that have called for a sweater.

Berkeley has been unusually cold this summer.

I lived in a Unit 1 dorm that faced west, and we had to leave the door open time-to-time because it would get too stuffy in the afternoon around the summer.

Can you rent a fridge or something? I’ve gotten mixed answers.

Yes, you can rent a fridge. Although I’d suggest not doing so. It’s a rip off. Just buy and bring your own. They suggest you not to do that, but they won’t stop you.

Seconded. Buy a fridge. It will be cheaper than the rental and you get to keep it afterwards.

how big of a fridge are we allowed to bring (sq. ft)? and how big of a TV are we allowed to bring? and does each dorm room have 2 cable hookups so both me and my roommate can bring our own TVs and hook them both up to cable and watch our own shows (with headphones i guess)?

To my knowledge, there is only one hook up per room. They don’t impose size limits on anything you bring. Although, you probably shouldn’t bring a full size fridge, or giant tv for the sake of your relationship with your roommates.

Fridge is one per double or two for a triple. There’s no specific limit on size that I’m aware of.

Bring a fan. If it’s too cold, don’t use it. If you don’t use it at all, who cares?

As per the cable question, to the best of my knowledge there is only one hook-up. However, keep in mind that cable lines, like electrical lines, can be split. So, run by radio shack and get a cable splitter for around $2.50

How many sockets do we get?

Get some surge protectors. Just trust me on this.

Definitely doing that, but I was just wondering how many sockets do we get? It’ll be kind of pointless if I buy 2/3 surge protectors and then I end up with only being able to use 1 of them because I only have 1 power socket, haha.
