What’s it really like at Dartmouth? Athletes, Greek Life, etc

Sadly, this is true at a very large number of schools.

True, but the level to which being thin was idolized at Dartmouth was pretty abnormal among even elite schools. I go to a different Ivy now and have never witnessed the level of disordered eating among girls as much as I did back at Dartmouth.

Take a trip out to the University of Arizona or Arizona State University. Just for starters. You’d be amazed.

This also exists on a few LAC campuses with which I’m familiar.

Generally speaking, the higher the influence of Greek society on campus and, independent of that, the more khakis, oxford shirts and Vineyard vines you see on campus, the more this will be a problem.

I hear you about Dartmouth though. I can imagine.

I would have your son reach out to kids currently at the school and ask to talk to kids who might be similar to him. Get the low down from students who are there now. Articles and comments from unhappy students who transferred out (before Covid even) supply valuable data points, but Dartmouth also has a really high retention rate. It sounds like he liked the school when he visited, but have him dig a little deeper. The truth is, there is no perfect school. Personally, I’m not a fan of the way kids are pressured to ED these days. Greek Life at Dartmouth is also pretty different from many schools-- the parties are open, and they have alternative Greek houses too. But there isn’t a lot else to do in Hanover for going out, so you have to be OK with that. I think the college runs some coffeehouses etc. but it’s not exactly a lively nightlife scene.

PM me, if you would like.

Thanks so much for your response - all great suggestions!

Specially re the “most students don’t go to football games because it’s freezing cold”- is this really true? When we visited it was a nice fall day and the stadium was full! Of course this is Ivy not SEC or Big 10 but I thought that football/tailgate-ish kind of spirit seemed pretty evident? Wrong?

Was it homecoming? That game is always packed bc the alumni show up.

And what did he decide?
