What’s the meaning of this?! (Room and Board Costs)

Hi guys,
So UCR gave me my financial package overview, where it stated the estimated “room and board” cost is $17,350.
However, today, I just got a UCR acceptance packet. On the Freshmen Housing page, it gives me a chart, where it gives the cost of housing and meal plans.
The residence hall housing cost is (per month): $1500 for single, $1300 for double, and $1165 for triple.
The dining plan cost is: $610 for basic and $700 for unlim.

Now if I take the most basic plans and calculate the yearly cost, it comes out to be $21,300. That is way higher than the estimate.
Can someone tell me if this is really the case or am I calculating something wrong. Thanks.

And it didn’t state whether the meal plan was monthly or not, so idk. But im assuming it is monthly.

A triple is $11,650 for 10 months and a basic meal plan is $6100. Total: $17,750/year. It’s only $21,300 if it’s a 12 month program.

@gumbymom, how many months is a year at UC Riverside?

Freshman housing typically is 9 months. Fall classes start Sept 23, 2019 so move-in is usually the week before. Spring Quarter ends June 12, 2020 so move out is usually within that week. Summer session housing is not included in the Cost of attendance so Summer housing is extra.

The $17350 estimate is correct depending upon your choices for the academic year at UCR (Fall-Spring quarters).

Thanks guys. I calculated 12 months without thinking the school year is not that long.
@Gumbymom Then it makes sense to move back with my parents during the summer right?

@Hammad80: It really depends upon you. Both my son’s came home the first summer after Freshman year to work and take some GE courses at the community college (much cheaper and no housing issues). After Sophomore year, they stayed at school to work.

@Gumbymom Okay, so if I were to get a job over the summer, it would most likely offset the living costs then? And the college expense/yr would remain at the estimate they provided?

Looking at the website it says you could be billed at either a 9 month cycle or 10 months, so check with the school to see which one it is.

At Berkeley my kid’s dorm has a yearly cost to it, but was split out into 10 monthly payments.

UCR’s housing website states that they have 9 month and 10 month payment plans. A summer job could help with housing costs if you plan to stay at UCR, just remember summer housing/tuition is not covered by financial aid if you are receiving any plus summer earnings will have to be reported on the FASFA.
