"What SAT prep book should I get?" SAT book reviews

Would you guys recommend the Gruber SAT complete guide 2013 or just the math workbook? Input would be nice.

curious5, out of curiosity (no pun intended), what factor about the Official SAT study guide would you recommend? It seems like people don’t typically like it so much they’ll suggest it to others. A lot of people who get it say they did so b/c “it’s by the college board so it must be the best” but later report they had to buy other study guides b/c they found it lacking except for the practice tests. Obviously, every person is different, so for some people the practice tests are a huge selling point and the rest of the book may not matter at all, but was just curious.

Does Gruber’s book help you with reading & writing besides Math? If not, would you just get Gruber’s complete Math Workbook?

Don’t want to get something you won’t need and loose the focus.

I assume the difference between — “Gruber’s Complete SAT” and “Gruber’s Complete Math workbook” is math section is the same and complete SAT has reading and writing besides Math. Can someone please verify and comment on the above info? please?

Many have touted Gruber’s as best for Math. I have got that book, went through all diagnostic tests and scored 100% yet when I take SAT I’m in 700 range. I believe Gruber’s is better for basic math, So if someone has problem with basic/fundamentals, they may be able to spot their problem area. He has done nice job of compiling all basic in one place. My point is it does not help me in pushing my score to high 700’s. Does anyone have any comment on this?

Out of curiousity, could it be said that The Official CollegeBoard Book has practice tests that most accurately reflect the current SAT?

I know it seems the obvious answer would be “yes,” but doesn’t the CollegeBoard Book have older and thus “easier” tests compared to the current SAT?

Thanks!

Don’t get Barron’s 2400. The Writing section especially contains obvious, blatant flaws and does not even reflect the real exam. Instead, get The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar.

I used the Barron’s 2400 and I thought it was pretty good… I hated the collegeboard one, it wasn’t very detailed in terms of answer explanations and examples

i know a website that provides a link to download best SAT book for free. i ve been there. no kidding it’s great.

Cool. I was able to download Barron’s for free! (Btw you are most likely going to get “warned” for posting links to outside blogs…)

Im taking the SAT in January so I have a little under 4 weeks to prepare for the SAT. My first time taking the SAT although I have previously taken the PSAT and some random prep courses my scores were:
CR: 680-700
Writing: 590-610
Math: 570

Any suggestions of prep books that are concentrated in improving certain sections? I already have the BB and its working pretty well, but I want to drastically improve my score. For writing I was thinking about picking up “The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar: Erica Meltzer”, for reading I believe Essential 500 is recommended.

Math is where the problem lies. I heard Dr. John Chungs SAT Math book is extremely helpful for those who are scoring in the 600-650+ range, however I’m not at this point. Should I still pick up Dr. Chungs book and hope for the best or try Barron, Gruber, PWN the SAT etc. I need to brush up on basic concepts but also want to tackle the harder problems so I can achieve the higher score. I’m in AP Calc AB as a junior and Im doing fairly well (got an 88ish in the class) but when it comes to the math in the SAT im in the dark. Any suggestions on 1 or more books that will both brush up my basic concepts and help with the harder problems would be greatly appreciated!

Any suggestions for books that will improve my score drastically is greatly appreciated! I have a pretty solid foundation for reading and writing, took AP English; yet when it comes to the SAT I completely bomb it :frowning: Trying to stay away from Kaplan and PR

Thanks in advance!!

Hey guys I’m kinda late but always…

I am a sophomore (co 2017) and will be taking the old sat and new sat (and new psat in oct 2015).
Until they release a proper book for the new test (supposedly, on the CB website and khan academy they are releasing some practice problems/study material for the new PSAT and SAT in January 2015), I am studying for the old SAT.

So far I took the first practice test out of the blue book and got:
CR: 630 (YEESH - on the PSAT this year i got a 72 in cr, but I generally suck at it - (btw got a 196 this year)
M: 690 (all the mistakes were stupid mistakes - I read the question wrong or did a simple arithmetic mistake)
W: 710 (only missed about 4-5 of the mc questions and assumed I got a 10 on the essay)
total: 2030

My study plan is:
-Blue Book for practice tests, I’ve heard that the first 3 are real ones that were administered so Im leaving those until the end
-Direct Hits, Barron’s for Vocab Lists, will use Quizlet for notecard practice
-Grubers for math, prob just skim through it bc most of my math errors were dumb
-For Writing, I am doing well, but I will look up some examples to memorize for the essay (but can do this later)

I really just need help for CR as this is by far my worst subject - I am studying vocab lists to help with the sentence completion - anyone have any other tips or suggestions for books to help with CR, or anything you did to increase your score, I’d appreciate it!!

Btw, you can find a pdf of Barron’s 2400 online for free (first link on Google)
The only book I have bought is the Blue Book, studying from Grubers and others from my local Library.

Lastly, I am trying to go to Johns Hopkins University and am really trying to push my SAT score above 2300…

(Sorry for this super long post) Plse comment - any advice is appreciated!!!

Karate17:
Math- go through Grubers in a couple days then take a practice test from the Blue Book, see what you mess up on and go over that again - keep doing this until you get the score you want
Writing- the book you chose is fine, for the essay memorize some examples (other posters on CC have already done this on other threads)
CR- can’t really help bc I suck

Good Luck

I need a 1800 to 2050 jump and I’m really good at Math but I just don’t do that well on the math for SAT. Also I’m really looking to up my writing score, mainly the multiple choice portion of the writing. So would someone guide me in the right direction with this please?

In 2015 still the Blue Book is the best to get high score in the SAT exam.
-Good materials.
-Good explanations.
-Ten practice tests with answer keys.
-Use real SAT test questions.
-Very helpful for SAT preparation.

 • Math portion is good.
