Hi, I am an eight grader who is applying to 7 prep schools, most of which I don't know too much about, so I started this thread. I want to begin some early connections, and I want to know the schools others like me are applying to, and why, so could you please state them. Also, I want to narrow my list down to the top 5 out of these. Here, I'll start:

Exeter (I have a good feel about it, and I know the most about it) (HADES)
Andover (HADES)
Choate (Good Reviews from friends)
Deerfield (HADES)
Hotchkiss (HADES)
St. Albans School (Friends older brother is a senior and loves it, and recommends it)
Saint Pauls Schools (HADES)

Williston Northampton
Episcopal High School (generally good feel. I know the most about it)
Peddie (AMAZING SCIENCE CENTER)
St. Andrews DE (a little small, but my parents know the headmaster so i think it will be worth applying)
Choate (I have friends in the junior and sophomore class who love it)
Miss Porters (my parents want me to apply to a girls school)
Loomis (They waitlisted me last year)

@Ehphant,
The only 2 schools I was rejected at were Exeter and Andover. I’m not applying to Exeter again because I don’t think it was a good fit for me. I’m reapplying to Andover, though. I honestly don’t expect to get in.

Do you think I should lengthen my list or shorten it, or add and take away schools. I don’t know if I should do all my essays, then be interviewed, because I fear that I may not like some of the schools, and my effort would have gone to the wrong place.

I wrote essays for 4, interviewed at 5, and visited but not interviewed at one other. I felt like that was enough, I could have written another essay, however the other school wasn’t for me. I would say request info from 7-8, interview at 4-6, and apply at 4-5.

@Ehphant, that sounds like good advice. I’ll start drafting my essays for the schools which I know a lot about, like the ones my friends go to, then I’ll request info for all of them (though four of them use gatewaytoprepschools.com, and I will take it from there. I have a resume well above average, so it shouldn’t prove to be a problem.

I wouldnt bother applying to more than 5, after all you will only attend one and it takes a lot of effort to write loads of essays and interview etc
