In the past few months I have been putting alot of thought into college and I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions of colleges that would suit me. I am currently in my junior year at high school and I plan on attending a liberal arts school (preferably in the North East) to double major in english with a creative writing concentration and classical guitar.

I have an unweighted GPA of 3.8 and a weighted GPA of 4.1. I am in the top 15% of my class and have taken 6 honors classes and 1 AP class so far.

I am part of my school's literary magazine, school newspaper, model congress, international club, V.I.E.W club promoting diversity, Key club, and national honors society. I will play tennis for 4 years (3 years varsity), and played 2 years of soccer. So far I have 130 hours of community service. In my sophmore year I organized a schoolwide event called World Peace Day and will do so again this year. I also have worked since the spring of this year for 10-15 hours a week. I feel I will have a substantial writing portfolio as well.

I have been looking at schools such as Wesleyan, Bard, Brown, Skidmore, Middlebury, Hamilton, and Bates.

What do you think my chance of attending these schools is? I'd love your help and any suggestions as to how to improve my chances or if there are other good schools that would suit me. Thanks =)

I’m not going to address the writing as there are others more qualified than I. I can address some of the music aspects and sources for additional info.

With the exception of Bard (Conservatory), all the schools you mention offer BA’s, not BM’s in music. There is a difference, and the focus is on the depth of the curriculum and required credit within the major to fulfill degree requirements. Private instrumental study parameters, as well as music admissions will vary at each of those programs. Peer quality may be spotty across all instruments at a number of these institutions, but that be can far less of a factor for a classical guitarist than one intent on pursuing an orchestral instrument. The key is finding an instructor that you can mesh with and develop your skills and talents.

Regards Bard, you can study either through the college at the BA level, or at the BM level (which mandates a second BA in a non-music major), and is a five year program. Currently there is not a listing of classical guitar as a performance major, nor listed guitar faculty). They are still building the conservatory program. There are a number of Bard posts on that forum by N8MA, director of conservatory admissions. Feel free to post or pm him, and he can direct you to specific info or provide clarification.

Most LAC’s will encourage a dual pursuit, which is not always the case with conservatory level programs attached/affiliated with universities.

If you are female, take a look at Agnes Scott College (Atlanta Georgia). They have the kind of writing program you are looking for and they have a lot of music scholarships. You might fit in very well.
