What school can I get the most aid?

So I have a lot of "need". My EFC is roughly $2,900.
My stats are decent: SATs 1890, 1240 m/r. GPA, 3.83

My problem is that UNH (my state school) is very expensive and the net price calculator is far from meeting the amount that I would need in order to be able to attend. Are there any schools that I have a reasonable chance of getting into that offer a lot of aid?

How much will your family pay?

Can you copy/paste the UNH results?

And also try the UVM net price calculator.

Also…try the NPC on the UMaine Fort Kent website. You would also get a merit award, I think on top of their aid.

We can’t really help you since we don’t know how much your family earns or how much they have in assets. There are schools that give great aid, but they won’t give you a DIME if your family earns too much. Also, those schools usually require higher stats.

Sure. Total Family income = $36,000. Taxes $1,500
No assets. No owned businesses. No savings/retirement accounts. Little liquid assets.
UNH results were:
$4000 Pell Grant
$7000 institutional need grant
So the net price would be about $19,000

How many times have you taken the SAT?

Twice. The first time I got an 1880, the second time an 1890. So not much progress, unfortunately.

What is your breakdown?

660 reading, 650 writing, 580 math

No scores higher on the first test?

Nope, I wish :)

Run the NPC on UVM and UMaine Fort Kent websites.

copy paste their results here.

UVM would be worse than UNH. The only state that will give great aid near you is Maine. Try the NPC for Southern Maine. Your close to the best merit aid from Maine just seeing if you superscore. What if your major? If you pick one from the New England Tuition Exchange Program and go to Maine. You can get almost in state rates and merit aid.

The site won’t let me copy paste the results. But UVM was more expensive $28,000. UMaine and USM were over $18,000. Unfortunately there are no business or economic related majors in the New England Tuition Program that I could find.

My mistake, you were right. I re-searched the NE Tuition exchange program and did find some potential majors. Thanks a bunch!!! My counselor was saying how I might be better off through a private college. Is that true? I feel like that would be more expensive…

The University of Southern Maine brought me to zero on the NPC for you with any major. Check it yourself. According to the Net Price Calculator, you would get the President’s Scholar award $12,000, Pell grant $5730, FSEOG $100,. It says $3500 work study and $7500 loans (but you can only take $5500 the first year). If you only take the $5500 Stafford loan, your remaining net price is $2000. Need to add books and personal expenses. Portland ME is awesome and might be your best bet.

I didn’t get that the first time, I will try again! Thank you so much!!

@judy28 Did you see the net price calculation for any major? Above. I ran it for you as a regular out of state student. Are you getting similar results?

I said UMaine Fort Kent <<<===== This is a different school from UMaine.

Run the NPC for UMaine Fort Kent.

How did you come up with your EFC? Do you have a single parent home? If so, then that may be why your EFC is higher than what @gearmom got. @gearmom is getting an EFC of 0…but that maybe for a 2 parent home.

Okay so for USM I got a total cost of 33k, then a net price of 18k, and then after loans $7k.
Fort Kent’s calculator only works for in-state students…that’s weird…

University of Maine Fort Kent

2014-2015 Scholarships for First Year Students (12 or less college credits)

Scholarship Name Eligibility Requirements Amount

Bengal Gold
2 out of 3:
If SAT score is 1050+ (23+ ACT), class rank is top 30% or High School GPA of 3.00-4.00 $5,000.00

Bengal Silver
2 out of 3:
If SAT score is 950-1040 (20-22 ACT), class rank is top 50% or High School GPA of 2.80-2.99 $3,500.00

Bengal Bronze
2 out of 3:
If SAT score is 850-940 (17-19 ACT), class rank is top 50% or High School GPA of 2.60-2.79 $2,500.00

The above are the merit scholarships for UMaine FORT KENT (not UMaine).

This school has a very low OOS COA…much lower than UMaine

1240 m/r. GPA, 3.83

With your stats, you qualify for the biggest award…$5k per year.

So, with that merit award, a Pell Grant and $5500 student loan, nearly all your costs would be covered. You could cover the rest with earnings from a summer job and maybe the Tuition Tax credit that your mom can file.
