By music scene I mean the college & nearby community, like Nashville (Vandy?) or Austin, Texas, home of UT. Does the wonderful music scene in those 2 towns permeate the nearby colleges?

Looking for a community to play music & hear bands more than to be an aspiring music major.

I'm guessing schools in Boston maybe? I think Boston has a strong music scene. So there is Harvard (technically Cambridge but Boston is approximately 4 miles away), BU and BC.

Atlanta has a decent music scene. Emory is really close to downtown Atlanta.

When you say "music scene", do you mean classical performances all year around on campus? Or do you mean having contemporary bands playing nearby often?

Northwestern is good for the former as the school has one of the top music programs in the nation and students perform regularly. You get to listen to their performance at a very cheap rate. Chicago has great jazz but it's not really right around the campus.

Yes. Vanderbilt for sure. The Music Row recording studios are right around the corner. There are dozens of places nearby that feature open-mike singer/songwriters and bands 7 nights a week for very cheap cover prices because of the competition. For seeing live music right near campus for cheap, I don't think anywhere would come close to Nashville/Vanderbilt. The Bluebird Cafe is famous for breaking new acts.

Had a friend from high school who went there long time ago and got heavily into Doc Watson (acoustic guitar) and stuff like that.

Boston, Phila, and New York all have Indie rock scenes. Unfortunately, most of bands play clubs and it's often 21+.

UT Austin definitely, although probably not as big as Nashville.

Atlanta has a pretty good music scene. Decent amount of recording done there. Plenty of clubs.

Athens, GA (UGa) was a hot-bed of "new wave" - the B52s. Don't know how strong that is these days.

Los Angeles, of course. Although getting around without a car would be tough.

Chicago is a fantasic live music club city, especially for blues.

obviously any school in a big city is going to have music available off campus.
The best cities for music are obviously New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco.

If you want your COLLEGE to have a great music scene, look for schools that have large music departments. The obvious one is Oberlin college, which has live music every day on campus because there is a world class (top 3) conservatory adjoined to the college. Obviously you arent going to get big-name rock acts in such a small time, but you get big name classical/jazz/blues acts and all the indie music you can eat. I visited it, everyone there has a love for music.

"When you say "music scene", do you mean classical performances all year around on campus? Or do you mean having contemporary bands playing nearby often?"

Sam Lee-- to answer your question, interested in more contemporary music, especially where the local music culture has positively infected the school.

alexandre has a pretty good track record with accuracy in his comments.. but maybe he's just too far removed in Dubai to know that no good bands come to Ithaca.

i would say underrated music cities are Portland, San Francisco, Austin, and, as mentioned earlier, Oberlin, OH.

The City, you are right that not many bands travel to little old Ithaca. However, many good bands actually start in Ithaca. I cannot explain it, but it is true. Ithaca has a small but thriving music scene.

yeah, berkeley is great...
The Greek Theatre.. which is a theatre at berkeley, hosts famous musicians every weekend.. im not sure if students get a discount, but i know that the concerts there are a hot ticket even for people like me who live in the bay area but dont go to berk.
