What School is best for my son--suggestions please

Your correspondent is not Miss fif, but rather her Dada. Pay attention:0).

Berkshire offers a well established learning support system solidified in recent years by the legendary Barbara Kenefick. In fact, the center is named for her. She has worked with students at Salisbury, Miss Hall’s, Hotchkiss and Berkshire. They offer tutors, time management etc. Like at most schools, most of these services require an additional fee.
This has been an invaluable resource to Miss fif who is now on the honor roll.

As for lacrosse, Berkshire is moving up to NE West I this year, after years of dominating D-II. They’ll struggle a little bit but are well coached. Have sent some players to strong college programs, including a boy now at Duke.

I would really look at Kent. I go there and I think that the ADD support is great(My room mate and I both have ADHD/ADD). We have “Super Study”. This is basically a 100% distractions free environment… IF you want, you check in from 8-10 and you can do tons of work just because you are 100% focused… We have study skills seminars and prep for the PSAT/SAT if you have ADHD/ADD.

plus peer tutoring isn’t looked down upon like it was at my old school. It is ridiculously common, and it is a great way to get to know people in you class or in your grade that can help you.

We also have “Conference” so twice a week one of your class periods is turned into a tutoring session with any teacher you want. Today I plan on going to get some extra help on physics, and that 45 minute chunk of 1 on 1 time is so valuable… This is all if your son uses it though.

We have ski club which goes out three times a week in the winter, and I believe half the lax team does it. You ski/board for about 90-120 minutes with a thirty minute round trip ride. I do football in the fall for conditioning and about half the lax team does also. The other half does soccer.

We aren’t the greatest team, but we have five all state players(two CT, two NJ and one TX). Three of which are juniors, plus very few PGs if any. No risk of your son starting one year and losing his spot the next. Your son could easily be a standout, we have one very talented sophomore defensemen but that is it.

Thanks I will take another closer look at Kent. However, when I contacted some one at the school they said they had no “formal” academic support program. Maybe I am using the wrong words.

What are the thoughts about the following in terms of academic support?

Taft
Hotchkiss
Salisbury
Berkshire

I think the academic support is best at Taft and Salisbury of the list you had.

Formal academic support may not be the best term, ask about conference periods. super study, peer tutoring and mandatory study hall.

You might consider hiring an educational consultant who specializes in secondary schools. That person should be able to provide you with a list of schools that meet your requirements. I’m suggesting this because academic support can be broadly or narrowly defined, and someone familiar with the academic support offered by specific schools should be able to recommend the right level of support, as well as top-notch lacrosse, and schools that would be interested in a B+ student.

There are many educational consultants who will tell you that they know all about boarding schools, but their real specialization is college admissions. Try to find a consultant who knows boarding schools.

Of course, the suggestions here are helpful, but academic support can be hard to define.

What about academic support at

Northfield Mt Hermon or Williston Northhampton?

Someone here said that any number of schools do in fact offer academic support, and they are right. As someone who went through a search for a son who sounds in certain respects like yours, I learned to be wary of schools that hid their academic support. Salisbury has a great Learning Center, and so does Proctor. I haven’t kept up with their lacrosse programs, but for some reason I recollect that Salisbury’s program was stronger. Although I have no experience with Brewster (since they did not have football my son didn’t want to investigate the school), I do understand they have a good learning skills program. Cheshire Academy has the Roxbury Program. We met their lax coach; I think they were still “building” their program, but you might check it out. I suggest you also consider Kents Hill School, which is the school we settled on. They have the Waters Learning Center, which has a good reputation and has done right by our son. Like Salisbury, the program is built into a student’s schedule, and like Salisbury, perhaps 17-30% of the school is enrolled in it (don’t hold me to these figures). Additionally, their lax team last spring were state champions. Ok, that’s not like being state champs from Long Island or Baltimore, but for a school of 230 students, remarkable nonetheless. PM me if you’d like more details. Cheers!

FWIW:

2009 Laxpower National Computer Rankings –

10 Deerfield

17 Salisbury

28 Brewster

38 Governor’s

2009 Inside Lacrosse National Poll –

10 Deerfield

21 Salisbury

Salisbury beat Deerfield, 7-6, last spring…

This is my daughter’s 4th year at Brewster Academy.

Brewster has a very strong Instructional Support program (there are different levels of support available depending on student’s needs) as well as differentiated teaching within each classroom. Students can move in and out of the support program if appropriate.

Boys LAX is consistently strong. There is a ski team and recreational skiing available. They have an outdoor skills program and many other sports.

Brewster is in the forefront of educational best practices including incorporating experiential learning into the curriculum.

Hope this helps.

Bump up now

I know nothing about their Lacrosse program, but I think the Winchendon School in Winchendon, MA has a stuctured learning program. I do know their soccer and basketball programs are excellent.
