What school is known as being a smart kid's safety?

Are you serious? Because UT Austin was going to be MY safety.

No, no, no! Look, UT Austin is ever smart Texans' safety because they HAVE to admit you if you're in the top 10% and guess where I am. :P

Yeah UT-Austin is my safety too, but some people come from very competitive high schools where it's almost impossible to be top 10%.

most public schools, Tufts, Boston University, Northeastern, Colgate, Pitzer, American Univ., Emerson

what about a school like pepperdine? would that be a saftey? and also how much of a saftey is Boston University?

Collegeboundjen, your list is a bit off. I would never put Tufts or Colgate as a safety school for anyone, especially after this past year. As for "most" public schools, I trust they don't include UVa, Cal, Cornell, Michigan, UNC, William & Mary, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, UCLA, UCSD and increasingly Maryland, PSU and UCSB.

Cornell is not public. And for an in-state student with high enough stats, a lot of those places can be safeties.

Boston University is on par with Rutgers in terms of safetyness.

if you have a 2300 SAT, 750+ on ur SAT IIs, around a 3.9 GPA, ECs that show you're not a hermit (officerships required), and you can write decent English, you can be pretty damn sure you'll get into cornell.

I disagree. Rutgers is alot easier to get into than Boston University.

Anyway I would say that if someone has decent chances at HYPSM with at least a 2150 that Boston is pretty much a safety. Another point to consider may be that Boston is about 2x the price of Rutgers.

Collegeparent - the question asked by the poster was "what school is known as being a smart kid's safety?"
Colgate & Tufts are without a doubt known as being back-up choices for students applying to HYPSM & the like. Yes, they are fantastic schools, very competitive, however, that does not mean that they aren't safeties for top applicants.

And you are basing this on...?

Ritz, I probably would not consider Pepperdine a safety. The reason: they are very concerned with "fit" and have been known to reject kids with excellent stats in favor of kids with lesser stats who are a better "fit" with Pepperdine's religious and character desires.

I think there is absolutely no such thing as a "one size fits all safety." As Momrath has already stated, a safety is not really a safety if you would not want to go there even if it were your only acceptance. Instead, think carefully about what you need in a college in terms of atmosphere/academic philosophy/other factors --- if you already have your reach schools picked out, consider exactly what it is you like about them. Then, find less selective schools that closely match those same factors. The biggest mistake is to choose a safety that is wildly different from all of your first choice schools - i.e., a large public when your other schools are all LACs, etc.

Berkeley, UChicago, UPenn ED (college), and the rest of the UC's are all great "smart kid safties."

The UC's are no one's safety if they are not Calif residents, sorry!

UVA and W&M if you live in VA. Most 'smart' kids get into UVA in our school. For W&M I've seen not spectacular kids get into it.

community colleges always work as safeties...... hahahaha

UChicago and UPenn anything are NOT safeties in any sense of the word...

You're right about UPenn (RD) but Chicago was a safety for me. They heavily recruit national merit finalists. That's about as high up as one can go when talking about safeties, barring special circumstances. I don't include ED chances when talking about safeties, because labeling a school a safety implies you wouldn't apply early decision.
