Hey, I am looking to study electrical engineering specifically optics but would also like to get a minor in art. I am currently looking into GA Tech but I’m worried about its lack of an art program. Are there any schools about equally qualified in ee but also have an art program? Or is there a way I can get a minor in studio art at GA Tech?
If you could give us your home state, stats, desired locations, and price range it will be easier to answer your question.
If you would like a school comparable to GA tech w/an art minor, I suggest Cal Poly Slo. However, I have no idea if this matches your grades/scores, likes, cost, etc. This is why more info is needed.
CMU and Gatech have design degrees that areally really aimed at product design.
It will depend on how much you want to veer from engineering. Colleges have design that integrates engineering or can just go ART!
It is difficult to have a minor as an engineering major, especially one that is so unrelated.
I have known two people who have done either engineering or math with art (sculpture ) double majors at CMU. In both cases, there was no effort to link the two.
Tufts offers BSEE and bfa degrees. As I read this thread, it seems that one option is to double major but keep these interests separate. The other is to find a way to marry them. It seems to me that which option you prefer might recommend or eliminate certain schools.
@gardenstategal I think you actually do have to link the two majors when you double major at cmu. There is a final project that needs to be done that links the two majors before you graduate.
That’s helpful, @Greymeer . OP, you should think about whether you want to link them or pursue them separately.
GT doesn’t offer a minor in ART, the closes thing they have is a minor in Industrial Design (offered in their College of Design). They do offer a few art classes, or you can attend art classes at other local Atlanta colleges (GT has an agreement with these colleges).
Otherwise, you want to look at large comprehensive universities, which usually have strong engineering and art programs.
I also wouldn’t worry about getting a minor, as engineering will be very time consuming. Think about taking several art classes, and if it works out you can earn a minor, great. Otherwise, a minor in Art really has little impact on your engineering career.
Case Western has an affiliation with the Cleveland Institute of Art.
