I'm not looking for an art school, but any idea which schools specifically those out west like in California and Colorado are known for their photography program?

You should give UC San Diego and UCLA a look, University of Southern California as well. Occidental has some kind of exchange going on with Art Center so that occidental students can do their art courses at art center and vice versa. Art Center is supposed to be pretty good for photography.

Schools that aren’t pure art schools, but have good art - and specifically photography - programs, and are out west: U New Mexico, Arizona State U, U Arizona, UCLA. These are actually some of the best photography programs in the US.

Also on the west coast is California College of the Arts and CalArts, both of which have supposedly strong programs in photography…

However, the best ranked photography programs are NOT on the west coast. They are Yale and RIT.

I also wanted to suggest that you keep in mind the kind of photography education you want to get. Many LAC’s and universities with photography programs have fine art or technical emphases whereas if you were more interested in getting professional training in photography an art school or a more technical college might be what you’re looking for. Of course, all art schools won’t have the same opportunities for preprofessional training - calarts photography for example might be more fine art oriented - but the ones that do like parsons and RIT will definitely offer you a greater professional advantage than what would be available at most LACS and universities.

PS.
in my experience, rankings, especially where art programs are concerned tend to be misleading at best. The criteria used are often mysterious and many of them base their findings on graduate programs which can have little to no correlation to the quality of the undergrad programs

RainingAgain, I’m assuming you’re at RIT? Are you in their photography program? Can you sum up your experience there so far?

Rainingagain graduated from RIT, and I think a professor at SCAD.

Not a professor at SCAD for three years now. Presently I run my own design studio. I did graduate from RIT with an undergrad degree in Photo however.
