What schools are like U Mich???

I just visisted Michigan and loved the atmosphere as well as the school spirit. However, I feel like I dont have a great chance of getting in. So I was wondering if u guys could think of any schools with similar atmospheres that I could also apply too.

I heard that Uwisc Madison is similar to Umich, i am not sure.

If you don't think you have a chance, turn in your application on October 1st and keep calling the adcoms like once a week. Make sure they know you by name and make them sympathize with you. Tell them "It's been my lifelong dream to go to U of M and I can't face the prospect of not going...". Show them that you really want to go.

i hear basically all the big 10 schools are like michigan. my brother went to penn state and his experience there sounds a lot like michigan.

mmm...but not all the big 10's compete academically q/ UM. Madison, Penn State, and maybe...MAYBE U of I are similar.

KB

yeah i meant like college experience wise but i think penn state, uw-mad, and uiuc are probably the most similar to michigan

If you're just going for atmosphere, then just about any major state school with sweet sports will do it for ya. If you want to throw in the academic factor though, Michigan has VERY few peers. The only ones comparable in both aspects are probably Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, Wisconsin, and maybe UIUC depending on what major you want to pursue. However, Stanford and berkeley and maybe UCLA are harder to get into than umich OOS.

I'm not going to talk business schools, but...

UCB, UCLA, Wisconsin, and I think maybe Texas and UIUC

Any big public with decent sports.

I'd say Cornell University is the most similar to Michigan.

How similar is Duke?

Duke is similar in that it has a very proud and loyal alumni base and a spirited athletic following. But that's where the similarities end.

I'd agree with that. Duke is pretty much everything I don't like about UM, with none of what I do like about UM. That's why I didn't even apply there.

Can you (kb and alex) elaborate on that?

Duke is smaller, privater, and snobbier.

A lot of the people I know that didn't get into UM and were interested in Business are going to Indiana. I'm visiting Indiana tomorrow, so if you're interested, send me a PM and i'll tell you how it goes, and if it's like Michigan.

"Privater"? LOL Stick to Math Chi! hehe

Maguo, students at Duke tend to be more "type A" and more conservative. Also, Durham is a more conservative town than Ann Arbor, has more crime and the residents of the city of Durham do not care much for Duke...whereas the residents of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan have a good relationship. Also, as Chibearsfan pointed out, Michigan is much larger than Duke.

Maguo, didn't you visit Michigan yet?

For the record, (going back to advice given on page #1) I don't know how begging the adcoms can help. Three people have to agree on your evaluation--there's no single adcom who has a say. Readers are distributed randomly, via a computer program. And even so, the readers don't get to ultimately say whether or not a student gets in. They give an evaluation, and a separate process is used to decide how many students (at any particular evaluation) will get offers.

I thought the "privater" thing was witty. Meh. Guess I'll have to stick to the math.
