Well, I fooled around in hs A LOT. I didn't study, do any ec, or anything helpful preparing for my college. Currently, I'm a junior preparing to take my sats which I expect to do well on, if I try hard. What are my chances of applying to

syracuse, nyu (pre-med), penn state, rochester, U-mich, maryland, boston university, uc irvan, Worcester state (pre-med),or Fordham.

I know I'm bouncing all over, thats because I really don't know which college will take me and I'm considering a career in medicine or business

My gpa is around 3.75 to 3.85 weighted and I'm in honor society, business honor society, and maybe french honor society if they accept me. I'm also taking 2 aps right now (us history and bio) and probably going to take another 3-4 next year. I'm in all honor classes expect MATH. I also did track in hs, but was injured, so I don't know if that will be considered. But I will be doing both winter and spring track full time next year. I'm also in DECA, interact club, french class, and Ambassidor's club and probably cramming more clubs in my senior year. So what are my chances of getting into any of those colleges (honestly, I don't care if you guys are harsh). And if it helps I'm chinese, came from China at the age of 5 and have been working for almost 5 years at my parent's restaurant, and the school consider us poor.

Oh yeah, I'm probably going to volunteer at some business firm or hospital this summer. I really want to get into nyu, will my chances be higher if i ed?

I naturally do good in school without studying, people think that I'm smart. And I never study for any tests, I only do my projects until the last minute. Like my 8 page term paper which I did the night before and still got a 95. Well, I didn't take the sats since I'm just a junior. But I expect to take it 2 times and my sats twice also. My school doesn't have a ranking system because they think it lowers your chances of getting into college.

I don't live in california. My sister is going to UCLA(she also lived in NY), thats why I want to go there. I live in NY, does that give me a better chance of getting to New York schools?

Syracuse, Penn State, Fordham, and Maryland are relatvely easy to get into. NYU, BU, and Rochester are moderately difficult. U Mich is difficult for kids from out of state.

Depending on your SATs, you may be underselling yourself. Score 2100 or above and you'd be competitive at whole bunch of good schools (that is, if that's what you want).

make sure you realize the GPAs colleges and other people post are unweighted, not to be a downer but a 3.75 or even a 3.9 weighted is not very competitive, id say just work really hard and do well on the standardized tests; apply to the colleges you want but make sure you get a couple safeties in there

chaudoinker: Excuse me, but a 3.75 unweighted is very competitive. It all depends on what school you are applying to, what major you want to succeed in, how your admission officers are feeling, and of course, what you have to supplement and complement your 3.75.

you need to understand that perfect people get rejected and not so perfect people get admitted. Very subjective business.

to let you know, there is a reason 2.0 GPA is considered average. though there are thousands of high achievers, very few of them actually HAVE passion and talent. they have perfect scores and perfect GPAs, not to mention a long list of meaningless EC's. in the end- its the person that counts. you go to Carnegie Mellon, and I'll go to UC irvine. we'll see who does better in life.

thebrown, You just said EXACTLY what I've been thinking since I started floating on this forum.... I think so much weight is put on a GPA. I think sometimes people forget that schools are different.... a 3.8 at my school is EXTREMELY competetive when you can only get a 4.1. Colleges look at the differences in schools--I think, although I'm certainly not the ultimate authority on it, 6_rings, if you score well enough on your standardized tests and actually care about going to a certain school, they'll definately see the good in you. Don't worry about a 3.8, as long as you keep it up. I wish you luck...

dont get so hostile, and why are you sayin im gonna go to Carnegie Mellon, besides whats wrong with that
by the way; the people you just described, im not one of them... not even close

oh no no, you misunderstood me. I tend to come off very strong, and I certainly don't intend on being hostile. I was just pointing out that 3.7 UW is definetley COMPETITIVE, whereas you said is isn't. You probably don't mean to say it isn't competitive, but we are on a forum, if you had "spoken" it to me, "vocally", then obviously I would know what you meant. But written literature comes across as more harsh, so I don't blame you.

nothings wrong with Carnegie Mellon, I'm just sore I don't have much of a chance there.

and I also don't mean to imply that you're succesful- or a failure. I am just stating different sceanarios.
