I am trying to decide between STEM and business majors.

I live in Wisconsin and will be applying to UW-Madison. I am interested in all sorts of schools: Notre Dame, Lehigh, Georgetown, GWU, Richmond, Maryland-College Park, Michigan, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Washington and Lee.

What are my chances for theses schools? Any others I should take a look at?

I know my ACT right now is weak for some schools I listed above, but it will for certain go up to at least a 32.

If your ACT is as high as you are predicting, you will be competitive at some of those schools but it depends on your major. If by STEM you mean engineering many of the schools on your list that you might thing would be matches will be reaches. OOS for the public flagships has gotten very competitive. Be sure to have true matches and safeties on your list.

Thank you for your response!

I know that Georgetown has a great business school but what would my chances be for their computer science program in the college?

if you are serious about computer science then Georgetown would not be a good choice.

You may want to look at Section C7 of the Common Data Sets for the schools that you have listed. Some schools such as Michigan consider GPA as a “very important” admissions factor and standardized test scores as an “important” admissions factor; for other schools, such as Georgetown and Virginia Tech, both GPA and standardized test scores are considered as “very important” admissions factors; whereas with W & L, GPA and standardized test scores are both “important” admissions factors and class rank and rigor of high school academics are “very important” admissions factors. My point is, your chances at admissions need to be considered in light of what each school views the relevant admissions factors; if you can’t bring up your ACT score sufficiently, for example, then Georgetown and VT are not going to be a viable options for you.

Also, in specific regards to Virginia Tech, a friend who runs a college admissions counseling service spoke this past Spring with an admissions officer from Virginia Tech, who said that their office had gotten a directive from the VT provost to lower the admissions rate. So they did and put all the students whom they would normally have accepted (beyond an elite group of applicants) onto the waiting list — apparently, it was a huge list. In the end, Virginia Tech took a good number of students off the wait list; but if you’re on that list, you just never know.
