What schools did you or your child turn down for Cal Poly SLO?

P.S. It sounded like this is directed at parents! The “you” is supposed to be for the student. I couldn’t change the title.

For my daughter it was:

UC Davis
USC
University of the Pacific
Indiana University-Bloomington
University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa
CSU Chico

UC Riverside
UC Merced
Cal Poly Pomona
CSU Fullerton
CSULB
Not that impressive.haha.

But I have a friend whose choosing Cal Poly over UCLA,UCSD,USC,and other mid-UC’s.=)

University of Wisconsin-Madison, UC Davis, UCSB & UCI

He almost became a Badger but Open House won him over!

Willamette, U of Colorado, UCSB, UCSC and UCSD, USD, Redlands, USF, U of Montana. In case this list looks strange, we’re OOS and she has this thing for California, in spite of our best effort to get her to look around a little.

Decided not to apply after visiting Loyola Marymount, UCIrvine, UCDavis, Chapman and Santa Clara for various reasons (mainly to do with aesthetics and/or ratio of men to women :)). Visited CPSLO for the first time last fall and experienced infatuation on first impression. Went back for Open House and fell in love.

As I say, we don’t live in Cali, and it’s interesting that the Cali transplants who live here say CPSLO is absolutely the best choice for someone who wants a strong academic experience coupled with a beautiful setting/opportunity to explore the outdoors, Central Coast style: hiking, rock climbing, surfing, mountain biking. She is so excited and proud to be a Mustang.

UCD, UCSB, UCSC, CPP and SDSU

Ucd, ucsd, ucsb, uci, sdsu, uop, sfsu

San Jose State, local community college. What a choice, right. I was adamant on Cal Poly since late junior year.

My son was admitted Early Decision last year. He didn’t apply to any UCs. He turned down:

Cal Poly Pomona
University of the Pacific
Seattle University

S turned down

CU Boulder with a Chancellor Scholarship and chosen to be a Norlin Scholar
SJSU
SDSU
USD
UCI
LMU with scholarship
SCU

Turned down UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Irvine, Santa Clara, Univ. of Washington for Cal Poly Engineering

Gonzaga
University of Washington

SDSU
Chapman (15k Scholarship)
Santa Clara (10k Scholarship)

It was really tough deciding between SCU & SLO, but I choose SLO. :]

UC Merced, UC Riverside, Tulane (15k scholarship), Willamette (12k scholarship and 18k in grants >.<)

I chose it over UCD and SJSU. :)

My son chose Cal Poly over:

UOP (Regent’s Scholar 5 year pre-pharmacy)
UCI (Honors Program)
UCDavis (Regent’s Scholar)
UCSC
SJSU

Oh good! I wondered if you would choose Cal Poly! Congrats! You made a wise decision, my friend.

**LSkaiWalk said:

It was really tough deciding between SCU & SLO, but I choose SLO. :] **

I forgot to add that my daughter had the Regent’s Scholarship for UOP ($10,000), as well as a $9,000 IU Distinction Scholarship for Indiana and a 2/3 tuition (OOS) for Alabama. Also, USC gave us a $20,000 grant. Last but not least, UC Davis gave her an almost $5,000 scholarship. BUT, all of these schools also included loans and would have been too expensive…although Davis would have been affordable had she wanted to attend. She didn’t! ;)

It wasn’t just about the money, though. She had starting narrowing her list down right away. By the way, I’ve seen some impressive schools being turned down here! When my daughter first got into USC about 6 weeks after Cal Poly accepted her, she was starting to wonder if she should consider it. (They have a 5 year BS/MA program for her desired career). Well, the FA package *still *was too high even with the grant. But, aside from that, she wrote a Pros and Cons list and **Cal Poly came out ahead! ** So, I’m not even sure if she *would *have attended even if it was affordable.

Our daughter #3 was accepted at a number of schools across the country–and we toured them all. She’s a perfect fit for Cal Poly SLO–because of all it offers and the friendliness to boot. Schools turned down included: Macalester; Occidental; Pitzer; Puget Sound; Lewis & Clark; Uof Vermont; Wagner; UC Davis; and UC Santa Cruz. Of the schools to which she applied, she was rejected by UCLA and UT (Austin) (my and my wife’s alma mater). As noted on the post about the open house, the personality of SLO made all the difference for her. Her older sister has been at University of Chicago for undergrad, her masters and now her doctorate, and loves it there (just awarded Fulbright for study in Russia next year to cap off her doctoral studies). A perfect for her–but not for D3. Her older brother is just graduating next weekend from Lewis & Clark-- double major in Spanish and international relations. His highlight there was the study abroad in Chile–great fit for him–but again not for D3. We are going to love having the youngest closer to home (for us). We’re still celebrating her decision to attend Cal Poly. It just feels right.

Great post flydad. You must be so proud of all of your kids! It sounds like SLO will be perfect for your daughter and I agree the friendliness factor is really a plus there. I think you will enjoy having her closer to home and also not paying OOS tuition. Sounds like a good decision.

D passed on the following opportunities and will be attending Cal Poly :)

Accepted with the following combined scholarship, grant and work study aid:
UCSC ($3.2 K )
UO Portland (22 K)
UO Pacific (16 K)
SCU (8 K)
LMU (13.2 K)
USD ( 18 K)
CSU Chico
CSU Sonoma
SJSU

Accepted after being waitlisted:
UCD (10 K)
UCSB (3.5K)

She feels the Cal Poly Business program is most suited to her learning style. Also, she simply fell in love with the campus, students, town and overall atmosphere. We are very happy for her - and very happy with the tuition going forward.

Although this is addressed in another thread - I’d be interested in coordinating the SOAR date with other business school families.

Go Mustangs!
