What schools do I have a decent chance of getting into?

I am a senior in high school.

UW GPA: 3.8
Weighted GPA: 4.23

EIC of my high school newspaper, President of a debate club, member of an anti bullying club, have been playing piano for 11 years, have about 160 hours of volunteer work at hospital and senior center

Sat score: composite - 1910. CR: 620 MATH: 630 WRITING: 660

White female with low income family, just including some background

My declared major is history.

Unfortunately, as hard as I tried I just couldn’t get my sat score up. Now I’m lost, I want to go to a school with great alumni, great sports, a fun social scene, but still be able to say I am proud to go to that school and have it be well known. Sorry if that’s confusing. Size does not really matter to me.

What schools do I have a decent chance of getting into with these statistics?

My class rank is 18 out of about 504

There will be a lot of match schools for you. Do you have a geographic preference?

@wisteria100 Nope! :slight_smile:

Gettysburg has a strong history program and your scores fit their profile. For a bigger school, Indiana Univ

@wisteria I live in California so out of state schools would be super expensive. Can you recommend more privates? Thanks!

Some UCs could be a good match, applications are due next week so that could be a stretch. Cal Poly SLO is a good school w/ a nice little college town. For out of state, you could do some safeties (many in Utah/Nevada/etc. has a program that will give you in-state tuition) like UNR (cheaper than in-state in my experience as you get scholarships for good GPA/test scores). I’m not as versed in privates, so sorry about that.

I’m a California student too. Good luck!

You actually get a boost if you apply to national LACs/universities more than 400+ miles away. Being low income, you also need universities that meet 100% need.
Kenyon, Macalester, Bryn Mawr, and Barnard immediately came to mind. Sport teams aren’t all that on campus but for Macalester, BMC and Barnard you can easily watch professional sports plus everything living in a nice area in/by a big city entails (respectively, St Paul, Philadelphia, and NYC).
There are lots of others!

@MYOS1634 does LAC stand for liberal arts colleges? haha. why do you get a boost? thanks! do you have anymore that you would recommend? Also, i heard barnard is super hard to get into…

You get a boost because you bring geographical diversity. A national university LAC wants to hae students from all states. But the overwhelming majority apply within a 400 miles radius (or even closer). Therefore, if you apply to a college that’s more than 400 miles away, you automatically get a boost (unless we’re talking Harvard or Stanford, which have no trouble attracting applicants from the entire world. But surprisingly even at rather high rankings this “boost” holds true.)
Apply to UCSC + a couple UC’s you like/ You’ll get better financial aid than at CSU’s. Have you worked on your essays yet? If not, get cranking reallllly quickly, they’re due in a week and you’ll need to write, edit, rewrite those essays, because they’ll often make the difference.
Chck out the schools on this list,
http://www.thecollegesolution.com/schools-that-meet-100-of-financial-need-2/
and read up on those in the Midwest and South + MidAtlantic. By definition, those are all excellent schools, since to meet 100% need for all applicants (or almost all), they need huge endowments and resources.

I am almost done with the UC process, but I don’t want to go to UCSC, the only UC I would actually want to go to is UCSB, not sure if I’ll get in though. Thanks! @MYOS1634

Hello!
I personally think that your GPA is great and will be definitely a shoo in at some schools.
If you aren’t willing to send in your SAT scores, have you taken the ACT?

chance me if you can too? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1834158-please-advise-me-will-i-get-into-uw-seattle.html

what are your safeties?

@MYOS1634 my safety right now is Syracuse because I’m pretty sure I’d get in… Though I guess im not totally sure haha. I feel like I need more safeties.

I’m also going to send my sat scores because I don’t really have any other options. I got a 5 on the APUSH exam though so I’m hoping that will help me as I am majoring in history
