What schools do I have a decent chance of getting into?

Bump

You’re low income and Syracuse doesn’t meet need… what does its NPC say?
I really don’t think you can count it as your safety.
Are you a NYS resident?

no I’m a california resident @MYOS1634 if i can’t afford any school i get into I’m going to just go to city college. but i want to at least be able to say i got in somewhere lol. Also, Syracuse is listed as a school that meets at least 94% of demonstrated need on this list http://www.thecollegesolution.com/colleges-that-meet-100-of-financial-need/ so… ? :frowning:

Yes, that’s why I said “why does its NPC say?”
It’s cool you can say “I got into College X”, but wouldn’t it be wayy better if you could actually afford to go?
You need two safeties, ie., universities where you’re sure you can get into, like, and can afford.
What about UCSC? UCM? Cal Poly SLO? Occidental?
Run the Net Price Calculators on the colleges on the list and cross those that are unaffordable.

@MYOS1634 my parents wouldn’t let me go to UCSC or UCM because id rather go to city college and then transfer to UCB or UCLA and save money. to them UCSC and UCM and UCR are wastes of money lol thats why I am looking for more private schools. I am not so much concerned about price (even though I know I should be) as I am with just getting into some good schools.

If you want to attend a “name” college such as UCB, UCLA, UCSD, then you ned to choose your CC carefully - Cuesta, Foothills, DeAnza, MiraCosta, SMCC, SBCC … have excellent transfer rates. Not all CC’s do.
HOWEVER, you may well attend a good community college, do well, and NOT get into UCB or UCLA (they don’t have TAG so admission is very selective). So don’t think it’s either UCB/UCLA now, or CC now but necessarily UCB/UCLA later.
ALL UC’s are good, certainly stronger than many Western Flagship, at a decent cost. Don’t discard them because your parents have the strange notion only two of them are good. Cal Poly SLO and SDSU are also good universities. I’d pick Cal Poly SLO for STEM and Business over SDSU, but I’d personally not know whether I like UCSC or SDSU better. UCSB and UCD are both incredible, and anyone would be lucky to get ino UCSB’s College of Creative Studies (which is like grad school but for handpicked undergrads.)

Please run NPCs and return here with each college and its net price, indicating which ones your parents would consider “worth paying for”.
Are there colleges your parents would refuse to pay for?

It’s pointless to get into a college you can’t afford.
Are your parents okay wish USC, Scripps, Pitzer, Occidental, Chapman, LMU? What about colleges further up the coast - UWashington-Seattle if they have 50K (why they’d want to pay that much when UCSB and UCD are right there in CA for half the price … not sure… but…), Lewis&Clark, Reed, UPortland, USeattle, Whitman, Willamette, Gonzaga?
What about paying for more personal attention (and more precise letters of recommendation), smaller, interactive classes, less redtape at a private college that’s well-considered in the academic world (but, because it’s small and doesn’t have a football team, they may not have heard of)? I’m thinking colleges like Smith, Wellesley, Macalester, Kenyon?

@MYOS1634 I am looking at schools like wellesley and smith but I don’t think id get in with my sat score… :frowning:

@MYOS1634 Also, Id love to go to UCSB! Just not sure if I’ll get in, which is why I want to have more options come april

1910 is fine, especially since you’re applying for history, not for engineering.
Your essays will be important, too.

@MYOS1634 I think my essays are pretty good haha. can you offer me any advice on whether or not i should send my subject test scores? I got a 600 on math 2 and 670 on ush. I’m hesitant in sending them because i don’t want the 670 in USH to make my 5 on the APUSH exam seem not as good, and well 600 on math 2 just sucks lol

Don’t send them if they’re not required.
1910 is fine, APUSH 5 is great, but subject scores below 700 don’t help.
Of course, if the colleges require them… then you have to send them to even be considered.

@MYOS1634 thanks! I’m just super worried my sat score will be the reason why I don’t get into some schools :frowning:

You can’t worry about that. Look at the 25-75 range: if your 1910 is around the “25%” then yes it could hurt you. If it’s close to the “75” number, it’s fine. And if it’s above, then it can only help you.

@MYOS1634 What if I am in the middle? Would being near the 25% one be really bad? I mean there are people that get in with a score near the 25%, right? sorry I’m annoying  haha

@collegebound200 I wish you luck with UCSB! I’m applying as well, beautiful campus and great academics.

@collegebound200 There has to be students getting in with scores near 25% for a college to have a bottom 25%. Some students even get in with scores below the 25%.

@ruetherford haha thanks you too
@AcceptableName i like your username!! lol thanks for responding, i wonder what makes those students stand out… probably personal statements
