What Schools Do i have a Shot on?

Thx 4 the compliment

to be frank, im not really familiar with colleges...i prolly need to buy one of those books that give guides to different colleges

could you type the full name of the college please? b/c i looked it up in collegeboard, but it's not there

and also, are there anymore famous college forums i can goto that have more infos about East coast?

thx

oh didn't notice your SAT score.

First of all, congrats on the high Math SAT score. 720 is an awesome score--you must be in the top 5% in the nation in math.

I understand why your verbal and writing would be so low b/c English isn't your first language, but try to raise your writing so that it's not in the 400 range. Maybe 600 for your verbal and 550 for your writing would be a good goal if you really worked hard for it? Or 550 for both? Also, if you somehow managed to raise your math to 800, that would be 800+550+600 or a 1950! Almost a 2000!

Like I'm not saying you have no options, cause I see Stonybrook and maybe RPI as an option, but a better SAT score would probably open the door for NYU and other schools like that because your other credentials look solid.

RPI=Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY outside of Albany. Those who are "in the know" in various math and science fields know its a great school. Well-known for engineering, science of any kind, and math. It's sort of like MIT, but far less selective (but still an amazing school!)

Thx 4 reply

the SAT was taken w/o any preparation...
and not to brag, but i believe that i can do better @ math ( 800 hopefully )
i think that 600 on writing and 600 verbal would be a GOAL for me

im going to study really hard during summer, most likely not going to see me w/o a book and a pen in my hands

unfortunately, i also have to take 9 SAT IIs from the Sept. to Dec.
therefore, i also have to study alot on them too
-SAT
-SAT II :
Math IC
Math IIC
Physics
US Hist.
Chinese
Maybe English?

Thx 4 the GREAT insights :)

You can raise those to 600! You can do it!

Why do you "have" to take 9 SAT IIs? Most schools only require 3. Are you taking a lot so that you can send your best scores? Take Math IIC, physics, an English one, and then, either Chinese or US History to send as a fourth one to counteract a bad English score (just in case). If you just finished US History and physics why aren't you taking them this year? It's best to take them when you just finished the course. You can probably still register for them in June, and if not, you can be a walk-in. Ask your guindance counselor about registering to be a walk-in for the Physics and US History SAT IIs. If you want, you can even get one of the other SAT IIs out of the way in that sitting--I think you can take three in one sitting, which would clear up your summer to focus exclusively on SAT I.

I think it's a formidable goal to take 9 SAT IIs but you should take far less and focus most of your energy on maintaining your high GPA and improving your SAT I's.

what do you want to major in? If you, like most asian people. want to major in engineering. Purdue in Indiana is a great match for you.

i guess i didn't explain my SAT II plan in detail, sry bout that.
SAT IIs-
Math IC (2 times)
Math IIC (2 times)
English (2 times)
Physics (1 time)
US.Hist. (1 time)
Chinese (1 time)
--total-- 9 times
6 subjects

the ones im taking more than once is b/c this way, i can send in my best scores, leaving me a safe to improve

i didn't plan correctly, i didn't think that much ahead....and when i realized, i was 3 days passed the LATE DATE....therefore, i have to take PHYSICS and US.Hist on Oct(?)....which forces me to review during the summer....
sigh

i'm not really planning on going for Engineering, but again, i haven't figured out what i want to major...

possible choices
Business
Architect
Law(?)
again....anything can happen, i may change my mind...i have 5 months yet to decide i guess....

another Question - i asked my counselor(if that's how to spell the word)

about the New SAT, and the response i got was : the colleges will not put as

much emphasis on WRITING as they will compare to Verbal and Math....

is this TRUE? or is it just a HYPOTHETICAL GUESS?

Again--you can register for the SAT II on the day of the test as a WALK-IN. Ask your GC about this option.
6 still seems like too many SAT II's. You can eliminate Math IC--your doing well on the math IIC implies that you would be able to handle math IC as well.
I don't know about the writing thing, but it might be true for many schools because it's a new test, and they haven't worked out the kinks, so I'm sure some schools will be willing to give students the benefit of the doubt.

Of course, ask your GC before deciding to elminate the math IC b/c I'm not a paid professoinal and I could be wrong.

Are You sure about the WALK-IN REGISTER thingie??

b/c if that's true, i will thank you forever...., i will talk to my counselor about it more, but thx about the little tips, glad to have my hopes up again.

it is true. but it may not work. let me explain. It all depends if the testing center you go to has an empty spot. If they do, you can take the test, at like double the regular cost. If they dont, you are out of luck. I would NEVER attempt walk-in registration unless there is absolutely nothing you can do.

O...i'll talk to my GC about it, and see what he says, thx for the advices

Ok, first of all, you need 2 or 3 good SAT II's - not thousands of them. You should practice your SAT II's out of a prep book, not on the real test. Many people find that taking 2 at a time gives the best result - other others find that 3 are ok. I don't see the point in taking IIC and IC - do your best on IIC the first time and you don't need to retake. Add a science and history. Do not attempt the literature test if your verbal and writing skills are weak: this test is a bit on the unpredictable side anyway.

If you are going to take the test standby, you will need to obtain a registration form from your GC and complete that before going to the test. You may want to call the test coordinator for the test center to ask if they allow walk-ins, and if it looks like enough booklets are available.

Other schools to look at in addition to those already mentioned: Penn State, Case, RIT.

im going to use the prep book, taking IC and IIC both twice is just to have another chance to do better if i messed up the first time.

English....still struggling if i'm going to take it or not.

U.S. Hist -> i think i can do pretty well on because im in AP.American Hist. right now, and my teacher said it should be easy to get a nice grade.

Physics -> my strongest subject right now, taking AP.Physics with an avg of 97-98, so i dont think it would cause any problem

i just order like 5 books for preping, during summer, i will study really hard for these SAT IIs and SAT.

i'll have to wait till Tuesday to actually know if i can do the walk-in exam and its price b/c i have a Fieldtrip on Monday

btw, can u type the full name for Penn State? i typed it in Collegeboard, 10 popped up

thx for your help

dude there is no point taking 1C and 2C together. U just need 3. and !c and 2C only counts as one. If you are trying to get into selective colleges, you need to take the 2C

IIC is the one u should take if u plan on going into selective colleges.

generally colleges want SATIIs in 3 subjects -- wriiting, math IIC preferably, 3rd of ur choice.

w/ the new SATs i think its just 2 SATIIs of ur choice.

if u're going into engineering IIC is a must and a science generally.

Ok...
1 question, wouldn't it worth it to take Chinese, US.Hist, and Physics since they are "700+ Guaranteed" ?

for math, i just want to have more chances to do well on them...

again, i dont really understand the SAT II system, so all advices are welcome and will be taken into consideration, Thx

how is US Hist and Physics 700+ guaranteed? Also, Chinese would not help you. Most colleges say that if you speak a different native language, do not take it for one of your SATIIs. It looks bad.

but doesn't it show that i have the ability to speak Chinese?
