James Madison University

Depaul also has showcases in LA,NY, & CHICAGO

BYU (Brigham Young Univ) and their Music, Dance, Theatre program does an audition-based Senior Showcase in LA and NYC. My best friend’s D is prepping for it right now…

Although a senior showcase certainly can’t hurt, and it’s great when a college has it, I don’t see it as a make-it-or-break-it thing.

There are many ways to find an agent. For instance, you can apply for an individual appointment. Or you can pay - relatively inexpensive, $100-$200 - to have a workshop and audition for a panel of agents. Agents want clients. That is how they earn money. If you put yourself out there and you are willing to do whatever work the agent sends your way, and you are polite and appear easy to work with, and you are marketable, you’ll find an agent. If NYC is your dream, you can certainly start there, but it’s not necessary. Across the country, there are many agents specializing in this or that.

However, if you want stage acting only, most agents won’t take you unless you’re equity. So the biggest hurdle for most actors is getting that equity card.

That would be my question for the school–what opportunities exist within the school - via internship & other opportunities - to get EMC points, and what percentage of students do earn equity points? Anyone know this? I can’t find a thread here in CC.

I forgot to add–I’d also want to know what percentage of their graduates a) appear in their showcase and b) are offered contracts with agents. Percentages – not one or two anecdotes, like ‘Jane had her showcase and got an offer and is now on tour!’ Great, but that’s Jane. If you take only one example, you have NO idea whether Jane got an offer because of her 4 years at the school, or if Jane would have gotten an offer anywhere because she’s that desirable, or if Jane is really rare and most students aren’t even offered the showcase and/or don’t get any offers. How well do the colleges prepare all the students and help them make the connections? That’s what I’d like to know.

Shenandoah does an On Campus Showcase. Instead of taking students to NYC to sing for all of the agents (which are usually actually fresh out of college interns sent by agents) in 1 hour, the actual agents and casting directors come to Virginia over 6 weekends and the students sing for them over a 6-8 hour period on each of those days.

In the end, SU offers 36-48 hours of showcase in VA compared to the typical 1 hour of showcase in NYC.

James Madison University

Corrections - Northwesterns’ Chicago showcase is not audition based, if you want to perform in the Chicago showcase you just sign up. As far as my Junior daughter knows, there is no LA audition although she may be wrong because she has absolutely no interest in that.

Northwestern had their NY showcase last night and will again today and it was very well attended. After the showcase I was waiting outside for my daughter and I heard an agent stop by one of the kids who auditioned, introduced herself and said that she was very impressed and should expect a call from her later this week. Her parents were standing there and it was so nice to see everyone’s excitement as they all chatted.

I do think that CC places way too much emphasis on showcases, there are many ways to get an agent or manager or to be cast and most students would be far better served with one or two classes on the business side of acting so as to learn many ways to succeed and not pin their hopes on a showcase.

Ball State has already been listed, but check out our website for more showcase info.!

The seniors have been really successful this year and have garnered plenty of offers and work already. Our showcases have brought lots of opportunities and is all together a fantastic experience.

Hope this helps!
Kyler Kays

DeSales University and Western Connecticut State University both have Senior Showcases in NYC.

Wagner College holds a Senior Showcase every year in NYC

Based on what we were told at auditions, Elon does an on-campus showcase.

Really, a showcase is not a huge deal for me one way or the other, but I do think it’s important to remember that just having a showcase is not the same as having a reputation in the industry that will bring interest to the showcase. In other words -top agents have to care and come and it’s reasonable to figure that they are not attending most of the showcases on this humungous list in large numbers.

University of Miami has showcases in both NYC and LA. See here:

[Coming Up: ?WICKED? Tour returns with local ensemble member ? getting to be a lovely habit | CultureMob](http://culturemob.com/coming-up-wicked-tour-returns-with-local-ensemble-member-–-getting-to-be-a-lovely-habit)

Incidentally, Sarah Schenkkan just took the lead of Glinda in the national tour.

Shenandoah does an on-campus showcase. While the NYC showcase is “sexy,” the reality is its only one hour in front of people that matter and the people that matter often don’t show up - they send their interns.

The on-campus showcases bring people to the school and have them work with the seniors for 6 hours over the course of 6-8 weekends. That ends up being 36-48 hours of exposure to the actual agent/casting director vs. 1 hour with interns and maybe a few agents/casting people.

Showcase or no showcase, at the end of the day its up to the student to build on the connections they make and turn those connections into a job. Yes, the NYC showcases can be very good, but the school must have a reputation of great NYC showcases to attract the best industry people in the city. So when searching, definitely ask a lot of questions.

VT

SUNY Fredonia has what we call an NYC Experience at the end of Senior year. All seniors go to NYC and do 3 day workshops with name casting agents; the agents are guaranteed to show up and the students are guaranteed to be seen by everyone they work with. It’s educational and students have been signed through this program before, which I think makes it a great alternative to the typical showcase.

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland MT (BA) program has showcases in Scotland & London, and this year is the first year they will be adding a NYC showcase. They have completed their first two showcases (Scotland & London) and all students already have agents. Four of the graduating class are currently in consideration for lead roles in London and NYC!

I’m sorry but this is terribly inaccurate. First off in an agent or manager wants to sign you they could care less if you are Equity or not, it makes absolutely no difference. We sign non-equity clients all the time and book them leads in Broadway shows, if they want you they want you. “sorry you aren’t equity” is a simple excuse. Also, EMC, is laughable, it’s a dinosaur program, and frankly if you earn your card that way it’s a joke, also it takes forever! A showcase is ESSENTIAL to get in front of the right people. I attended a showcase last night of a not well known school but it was extremely well attended and more than 1/2 of the kids have offers for representation. If the school you are looking at does not have a showcase look elsewhere unless you are looking to go to grad school.

This only makes sense if you want to act as a hobby. A Showcase is ESSENTIAL, if you don’t want to waste years going to Equity calls and not being seen! It’s a business, and actors God Bless them, are usually not business savvy and you need an agent or a manager to get you going, and unfortunately a showcase is the best way for this to happen!
