If my SAT score is 2150+, my GPA is 3.83 WEIGHTED with only 1 or 2 APs a year, and my ECs are 4 year cross country(2 year letter) and 4 year basketball (2 year letter) at a big 5A school in texas with 2500+ students and I get National merit commended scholar/ maybe semifinalist(but prob not)....

what decent schools in california could I get into?

and a part time job at baskin robbins since sophomore summer(don't know if that matters)

Are you from California?
If so, I would maybe look at UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, UC Irvine etc…
There are many more that are worth looking into but might be reaches based on your ECs such as UC Berkeley and UCLA…
You’re lucky! California universities have a good reputation
Your SAT score is good though and your weighted GPA is pretty good (if not slightly average)…
UC Santa Cruz is a definite IN.

try to get GPA up as much as possible before applying. rigor is pretty weak… that 2150 will help, but USC/UCLA is definitely within grasp. just work hard the rest of the way!

I would have to disagree with the above posters, UCLA is not a grasp. UCLA is on a completely different level than USC.

If your UW GPA is above a 3.6, and you get good letters of recommendation, you have a shot at USC.

UCLA is the one of the most selective public universities in the country, with a 23.3% acceptance rate. The average GPA for acceptees was a 4.14. AND your coming from out of state, so your chances are REALLY small. Do not even bother applying to UCLA, it’s not gonna happen.

I also noticed you said a 2150+ SAT score…and not a definite score, which sounds like you haven’t taken it yet. Saying your going to get a 2150+ and actually getting a 2150+ are two completely different things.

Your in at all of the CSU’s, UCSC, UCR, UCM. But don’t be that surprised if you get rejected from UCI(avg. gpa is a 3.92), UCD (3.89), UCSD(4.06), or UCSB(3.91). Once again, your coming from out of state. UC’s are getting more and more selective, AND they’re cutting enrollment back. On a final note UC’s prefer smart Californian’s over smart Texan’s.

Patrick bateman, i think you hit the nail on the head. if you dont want your OOS status to hurt, look at the medium private schools in CA like University of the Pacific, Santa Clara University, and University of San Francisco. i think you would be a candidate for those schools. any opinions on this?

First, the UCs are very much looking for OOS students. They need the money. Whether the are worth $47K/yr is another question. But you have a shot at any of them as long as your UC GPA is about 3.9. The formula is on the UC Pathways website, and as it doesn’t include freshmen year it’s often higher That your weighted. Given that our SAT score is 100 plus higher than the average at any of them, your GPA can be a bit below their averages.

You have a reasonable chance at USC if you’re in the top 10% of your class.

You could look at Occidental, some of the Claremont colleges, Pepperdine, Santa Clara, but whether you need aid will be a big issue. UCs will give little or none and many of the privates don’t meet need, so the question could be better answered with that info.

And I’m not taking sides in the UCLA v USC debate, but the USC admission rate is around 22-25%, right around UCLA. Plus, USC is 27 in US World Rankings, while UCLA is a STAGGERING 2 spots above at 25; face it, they’re in the same league.

(Having said that, midtier UCs should be reasonably within reach)

----GPA- 3.83 W, probably ~3.6 UW(low rigor; only one or 2 APs per year) currently ranked 149 out of 613(barely top quarter, ouch) will raise it senior year though with 2 or 3 more APs

----SAT- 690 m 760 cr 740 w

----EC’s- 4 year basketball(2 year letter), 4 year cross country(1 year letter) at a 5A school with 2600+ students, National Merit Qualifier(waiting to see if it is commended scholar or semifinalist, probably just commended) NHS, maybe 60+ hrs community service, worked on and off for 2 years at baskin robbins and refereed youth basketball, aau nationals every summer, cerebrals society member (not sure if that even counts)

Dude, don’t trust USNWR, a lot of it is bogus. ARWU ranks UCLA 13th while USC is 50th. That’s a pretty big difference. I also find USNWR to be a pile of bologne, but that’s just personal opinion. Anyway, all of the kids I know who didn’t get into UCLA got into USC. There is no doubt that USC isn’t on the same level as UCLA, as far as selectivity and quality of education goes.

to onthefly…

Yes, you do have a high SAT score. And you are outofstate, which apparently UCLA accepts 25% of OOS applicants, which is a little bit higher than the 23.3% of in-state. But although I have no data to support this, I have a feeling that OOS students don’t have the higher acceptance rate because they have easier standards, but more likely because they’re stats are so high that UCLA would be unjustified not to accept them.

I have friends who got rejected from UCLA with a 3.84 UW/2200, 3.86 UW/2260, and a 3.91 UW/36 ACT, but who got into Duke, Cornell, and Northwestern (respectively). Then again, I have friends who had very similar stats with very little extracurriculars who got into UCLA, but I have less of these friends than the number of people who had super high GPA/SAT and got rejected. Like, the only way you can consider UCLA a match is if you have a 4.0 UW, and above a 2100.

Point is, you probably won’t get into UCLA, just cuz it’s a ****ing hard school to get into, but I guess if you really want to, apply.
