If you ight want to return to Caltech after this disciplinary matter is resolved, you could thi about trying to visit as a non-matriculating student at a school for one year, rather than transfer.

thanks for the idea pointoforder! if you visit for a year does it make it easier to get in as a transfer student afterwards? because the problem is i don’t know if caltech will take me back

RML: yeah i hear northwestern is an awesome school, that’s where the klein four acappella group is from, right? :D

liek0806: thanks for asking. i just got booted from caltech a couple weeks ago. it wasn’t for either academic or disciplinary reasons…kind of a long story and i don’t want to elaborate here because a ton of people in real life know who i am on college confidential. fau is the school i went to when i got put on leave last year. it was convenient at the time because i live ten minutes away, but i want a different school this time because i’m kind of running out of math courses there. (i’m already taking graduate classes there and i think i’m going to take all of the interesting ones this term.) besides, caltech told me to transfer to a school i’d be happy getting a degree from -_-

oh and i wouldn’t have to transfer back to caltech, as in i wouldn’t have to actually reapply, i’d just have to talk to the deans and ask them if i can come back. i would also probably not get credit for stuff i take at fau because fau sucks.

Must be SOME story…

fizix2- Is it reasonable to ask if you have resolved the issues that got you booted from tech? What are the chances that these issues will follow you to a new school?

kind of strange, but be sure you understand completely the technicalities of cal tech letting you back in. generally speaking transfering out means you will no longer seek a degree from that institution(in this case cal tech) and you will from the school you transfer into. Once oyu’re considered a full time student, I think you’ll have to reaply as a transfer back into cal tech and that will be much harder to do and maybe impossible to do at the senior level.
if you’re seeking a degree from cal tech, can’t you just take a year off for work/internship experience and just continue on at cal tech after that 1 year were you might be re-instated? its hard to give you advice when your situation is unique and is not very typical of most transfers.

I find it ridiculous that a student with a 3.8 from caltech cannot get into any school they want. If that is not proving yourself i dont know what is

hey guys,
i added berkeley to my list too,
because i heard it had a good math department

thanks again for all the suggestions!

well it is transfer admissions after all,
and in the transfer game nothing is really guaranteed

hmmm you have a point. i should be careful about that, thanks.
of course if i get into say mit, i might not bother to reapply :D

well they specifically said i had to go to another school for a year and live in the dorms. i know it’s kind of strange.

thanks anyway :)

well it’s only been a couple weeks so no,
but i really hope they’ll be resolved by the time i transfer.
then again with this sort of thing i can’t ever be 100% certain,
which is the worst part basically

Yo, engineering isn’t math or physics or CS. If you want theoretical math (and I highly stress the word theoretical), Chicago is a nice place to be.

However, there are other problems with Chicago. In particular, you’d have to complete the Core in the 7 quarters they give you to finish (unless you don’t need financial aid, which of course would mean that you would theoretically have 10 or more quarters to complete the work). I don’t think many schools would be happy with you transferring there and then transferring back after a year. Are you sure they don’t want you to just go to a community college for a year and return? A friend of mine had to do that…

would i get transfer credit from caltech?

they want me to go somewhere residential,
and (as much as they say the door is open)
i don’t think they want me to return -_-
they already had me take classes locally last year,
apparently it didn’t work so they have to do step 2
