What schools should I apply to?

Hey everyone, my name is Amy, and I am looking for 4-year schools to transfer to. Right now I am at a community college, but it's one of the best in the nation. I think it ranks in the top 5 as far as associate degrees go.

My high school career was a flop because of an eating disorder, as well as a couple of other untreated mental disorders. I graduated with a 2.7 GPA.

When I was fifteen, my parents and I began to take care of my mental health, but it was an uphill battle. At 20-years-old, I can say that I am finally in a happy, and healthy spot in my life. I am also ready to move on with it.

I started community college straight out of high school, at 17-years-old. I wasn't ready mentally, or physically. My first two semesters produced W, INC, and F grades. Once I found myself stable enough, I petitioned for the dean to reset my GPA, and I now have a 3.94. To my knowledge my W, INC, and F grades still appear on my transcript, but there is a note explaining that I petitioned for a reset. I am in the honors program here, and I have taken quite a few honors level classes. I am Liberal Arts major with an English emphasis.

Aside from my GPA, I am part of the Campus Activities Board, Phi Theta Kappa (honor society), Italian Club, Spanish Club, Student Government, Gay Straight Alliance, and I occasionally write for the paper. I have studied abroad in Holland, France, and England; I studied languages to the highest levels in Spain and Italy. I also help my peers organize trips overseas. I am a group leader for Relay for Life, and volunteer for the Special Olympics New York. I work part-time at a K-5 after school program, plus I have a second job at the Apple Store on the weekends. I design websites for singers/bands/actors/artists, and manage fan relations for them. I play the drums. I think that's about it.

I want to transfer to a school where I will be able to double major/dual major/somehow major in both English and International Studies, while possibly minoring in Public Relations. Is that even possible?

I am open to schools almost anywhere in the US and Canada. I wouldn't mind applying to colleges overseas either, if they'd accept me.

What are some good matches, reaches, and safeties for me?

Thanks in advance!

what year are you? how many semesters is your 3.94 gpa over? it could well be very difficult to double major if youre transferring for junior status or past that, unless you are well on your way to completing these degrees at your current school

ive never heard of somebody having their gpa reset nor am i sure how it will be viewed…you will definantly want to address this in your application…if you received credit for the courses that you took your first two semesters, it could be that these grades might well have at least some weight in your application even if they are not factored into your gpa…

In fall 2009 I will complete my associate’s degree in English. I will have 60-something credits. I’m not sure if I should go for another associate’s degree in International Studies, before transferring, or what. For being one of the community colleges with the best transfer rates, my advisors have been pretty crappy. They think it’s absurd that I want to double major in English and International Studies. Maybe it is, I dunno, but if anyone has any insight on if this is doable, and where I could possibly transfer to, that would be great.

Nobody can weigh in on this?

Do you have any preferences for colleges in terms of size, location (urban, suburban), private, public, academic rigor?

What state are you in? Is money an issue?

I’m not that picky when it comes to size, location, private or public institutions, or anything like that. I am very adaptable. I have lived in rural, suburban, and urban settings, and have enjoyed aspects of each of them. My big thing is a school where there will be tons of opportunity for me.

I live in New York State, and money is somewhat of an issue, but not a big one. Pretty much, if the school is worth it, I’ll be able to pay for it.

Bumping this up

I would look at some of the women’s schools like Smith, Mount Holyoak, Mills and maybe some other good LACs like Beloit, Earlham and the like. I think these schools may be more understand of your false starts. Do you have SAT scores?

To study PR you’d have to go to a larger U, but you don’t need to study PR to get a job in it. My good friend who runs an international PR agency says she never hires PR majors for key jobs, she hires the smartest people she can find with a broad liberal arts education.

Good luck!
