What schools should I look into?

Hello, I am 19 going on 20 and I am currently at a community college and working full time at a pretty decent job for my age. I have a 3.73 GPA, play club soccer, and I am looking into volunteering politically somehow (I was a delegate for my neighborhood during the last election's caucus). I have 30 credits I believe (some are from AP tests). I am looking to major in the business field because of career opportunities but I do like politics and law. What would be some good universities to look into for either the spring semester or next fall? I would like to try to get in the best program possible and work my butt off. I am a resident of Nevada if that matters. I scored a 29 on the ACT if that factors into admissions at this stage. Should I retake the ACT/SAT at this point to improve my chances or would it be meaningless?

Looking for some input please

I mean where exactly do you want to go to school? California, Stay in Nevada? East coast?

What kind of social/political environment are you looking for on campus?

Where do you want to go lol?

Don’t think this person is gonna respond guys.

Hello, the location honestly does not matter as long as it isn’t Wyoming or Montana or something that desolate lol. I personally wish to go out of state and not settle for UNR or UNLV, which is a big reason that I stayed in my hometown and went to the local CC in order to save some money. In terms of social/political environment I would like something in the middle. Not very liberal like Berkley or very conservative like BYU. I don’t mind a “party school” as long as it is still academically concentrated. I would still need financial aid from whatever school in question as I won’t be able to afford 40-50k per year for the next 2-3 years.

UNC-CH doesn’t have the same restrictions for OOS applicants…they also meet need for anyone they let in via work study etc…I was surprised at the generosity of their offer given I was an OOS transfer applicant…U-Miami will give some aid…around 25k/yr if I recall which helps offset costs

How about a CSU? U can get in under the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)
Program and save ALOT of money.

Note: Depends on the major which schools you can go to. What’s your major?

http://wue.wiche.edu/search1.jsp</a></p>

I was actually looking at both the schools you mentioned. Are top public schools such as UNC-CH, UVA, UT-Austin rather generous with their aid? Would I have a shot at getting in them? I was also looking at UW-Seattle, UI-Urbana Champaign, UM-Twin Cities and UC-Santa Barbara.

Would I have a reasonable chance at a top private school such as Emory, USC, Rice, or Georgetown?

Basically my short list of schools at this moment are:

University of Nevada - Reno
San Diego State
University of Washington - Seattle
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
University of Texas - Austin
Notre Dame
University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
Boston University
Boston College
Wake Forest
University of Virginia
Vanderbilt University
Rice University
NYU
Cornell
UI-Urbana Champaign
UC-Santa Barbara
Colgate University
Georgetown University
University of Miami
Pomona College
UCLA
USC
Emory

Some are real reaches (Cornell, Georgetown…) which I should probably not fuss over and others I doubt I will receive enough aid to attend (NYU, Miami…). So what do you guys think about my odds at these schools in terms of being accepted and affordability.
You can be blunt in saying I have 0% at being accepted at Cornell. I appreciate honestly lol

Most of those schools will be pretty tough. Some don’t offer that great of financial aid. Example: UT-Austin. I’m an in-state student in Texas so I know. Colgate also doesn’t really set aside a lot of financial aid money for the transfer applicants. As for the private schools, they will be tougher to get into. However, they do give generous financial aid. Try narrowing down your list. I think you have an ok chance at most of the schools.

UCLA go there you’ll do great things

Well the UC schools are difficult to transfer into OOS and plus their financial aid isn’t thrilling. I’m a little wary of UCLA and UC-SB.

That would apply to every public university you are considering. You are considering quite a few as well.

My friend went to Vanderbilt University and really liked it there. They have a great business program and they also have a soccer team i believe. My suggestion would be looking into each school and see if the campus setting is what you want (small or larger campus, housing situation, sports, good programs, etc).

San Diego State = Hard to get into.

Yeah I was surprised at the low acceptance rate at SDSU. It’s only 19% for transfer applicants. Much lower than top schools such as UNC-CH and Vanderbilt which are around 32%. I’m assuming this is because of the budget crisis in California and the fact that SDSU is one of the most applied to schools in the country.

Yes, you basically have to live in San Diego to get accepted as a transfer. That was the only school I got denied at even though I got accepted at Berkeley, which really doesn’t make any sense. If you want to save money I would avoid the private schools on your list because they are much more expensive. At the same time schools in California cost a lot more to attend than essentially every other state. So once again if you want to save money I would avoid this state, especially since your not a CA resident

Would anyone mind chancing me for these schools? Maybe on a 1-10 scale or something.

University of Nevada - Reno
University of Nevada - Las Vegas
University of Washington - Seattle
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
University of Texas - Austin
University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign
University of Virginia
Notre Dame
Boston University
Wake Forest
Vanderbilt University
Rice University
Cornell
University of Miami
USC
Emory

If there are any other schools you believe I should look into for either my field or because of financial aid please let me know.

Yea @roskee, it’s a shame that people with great GPA’s got rejected from SDSU just because they don’t live in San Diego. I’m from there, lived there from Kindergarten to 9th grade (back and forth from overseas), and I just wanted to go back home. To be quite honest, I kind of knew I had no chance. Slacking off in the beginning of my college career messed me up pretty bad. Luckily I got accepted to a CSU in Los Angeles (not CSULA). I’m going to apply to SDSU again for Grad school and hopefully I’ll have a chance to get in then.

I know the guy above me stated to avoid the private schools in CA, but I wanted to point out that if you really want to go to school in the San Diego area; they have like 4-5 universities out there. There’s University of San Diego, University of California San Diego, SDSU, and Point Loma Nazarene University… There’s even CSU San Marcos, which is in San Diego county but it’s in more of the outskirts of San Diego, still it’s a good area and a beautiful campus. It was ranked #1 as the safest CSU campus.

Now back to your question… In order for you to see where you stand with those colleges, I’d look on their websites and see what they’re transfer acceptance rates are. If they’re low, I would apply but wouldn’t get too hopeful. In my opinion your GPA is really high and some of these schools may think that you’re just applying to them because you consider them as “safety schools”. (Not saying you do but that’s how some admission reps think.) I think you have a high chance of getting into all of the Nevada colleges. Correct me if I’m wrong but you’re a NV resident right? If that’s the case then apply to them.

For USC, there’s really no real way for us to see if you have a chance there. USC is very picky when they’re selecting students, so you really don’t know if you have a chance or not. If I were you, I’d check the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/1349313-official-usc-2013-transfer-thread.html</a> to see how they may select their transfers.
