i'm trying to get a realistic feel for where I should apply. I have a 3.5 UW GPA/4.0 W GPA and a 1940/2400 SAT score. which tiers of colleges could I get into?

most likely top half of the UC schools should be what you're looking at. UCSD, UCLA perhaps. Try for some reaches like UC Berkeley. it's hard to gauge because i dont know the rest of your stats but with a 1940 and 3.5 GPA, that's the kinda school you're looking at. USC and some other private colleges like Pepperdine, Claremont colleges, etc would be in good too.

really? i think that ucla and usc would be reaches for me. i have great ecs, but my gpa took a big dip my junior year, going from a 3.8 to a 3.5. plus, my sat scores isn't all that great. but thanks for the advice!

you really never know what colleges want. classic tale? my friend who goes to another school had a 1900 range SAT, good ecs, passed AP tests but got a 2 on AP spanish lang, and had a 4.0 and got accepted to YALE. with a 1900 SAT! you never know.

same applies for UCLA/USC. i had a c/o 2008 friend who got in with many Bs on his transcript and an SAT score near yours. not that great of ecs. you can do it, just write a really compelling essay and have amazing recs.

While you may never know, you can take a very educated guess after you look at common data sets which tell you who schools have taken in the past. For most schools, you really can know actually.

How about focusing on what school you want -- large, public, urban, rural? Then narrow it down. Using the college board college navigator helps narrow down your choices and then you could look up the ranges of scores that they accept. I think visiting schools is essential if you want to get into a school that is difficult to get into. Plus, it helps to know if it is the right place for you.
