What score is "good" in SAT II Chinese for a non-chinese student?

I took SAT II chinese in novemeber
and I am on the verge of panic because
I want to major in Chinese

I've been studying Chinese for two years
plus one month of studying in China

but the test was so hard!
Is 600+ good enough?
or does it need to be 700 to impress adm officers?

600+ is really good in my oppinion. How good are you with Chinese?

Well, think I am about the average!
Thankx!!

about 40% of the kids that take it get 800

But most of them are native speakers, wouldn't you think? Like it's spoken in their homes? Love0567 has just taken it in school.

I will never understand native chinese speakers that take the chinese SATII. What does that prove to colleges?

That they know how to sign up for SAT II's. Or perhaps they were already taking one or two and just wanted to slap on another one. Or maybe they wanted to get out of the foreign language requirement. Or maybe there is no way for colleges to know who is a native speaker and who is just a chinese-american who takes chinese at school

Whatever it is, it isn't far. If so, mericans should be allowed to take the English SAT II meant for foreigners.

For the SAT II Subject Tests in Languages, the College Board published "SAT Subject Test Percentile Ranks" for the class of 2005.

<a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/about/news_info/cbsenior/yr2005/16_subj_test_percentile_ranks_0506.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/about/news_info/cbsenior/yr2005/16_subj_test_percentile_ranks_0506.pdf</a></p>

However, according to the notes accompanying this report there is a different report called "SAT Subject Tests in Languages - Total Score and Subscore Percentile Ranks for Students Who Studied a Language in High School" that "includes only scores earned by students with 2-4 years of study in a particular language."

Can anyone point me to where I can find this report which apparently breaks out SAT II foreign language results of non-native/non-heritage language test takers?

I have a friend who scored 800 as a non-native speaker. shrugs

Also, would that report mentioned above help? People can always lie in the optional questionnaire.

Is your friend a "heritage" speaker, and/or someone who lives in Taiwan like you?

As for your comment about people having the option to lie on the optional questionnaire, I suppose there are those that do and they probably get away with it. That's a sad reflection of their bad character. Too bad they feel they have to try to cheat the system to get somewhere. I prefer to believe most people don't lie, and frankly, it's become quite discouraging to be constantly reminded about those who do lie to game the system and get away with it: frankly I'd rather not be reminded or hear about it anymore.

hi :)
Thanx for all your posts
I got 720!
but seeing the percentage scale
im on the 17th percentile,,,
that's pretty depressing..

Forget about the percentile -- particularly as a non-heritage, non-native speaker. You did great and deserve to be very proud of your score! Congratulations!

Phew!, [url=<a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/about/news_info/cbsenior/yr2005/18_subj_test_languages_percentile_ranks_0506.pdf%5Dhere's%5B/url">http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/about/news_info/cbsenior/yr2005/18_subj_test_languages_percentile_ranks_0506.pdf]here's[/url</a>] i* the chart you were looking for.

720 for non-heritage and non-native speaker is godly. I know many who speak Chenglish at home and got 770.

yeah i know the saying "if ur chinese u should get 800 cus u speak it at home or wutever" but then how about us? If we study English at school do we all get 800 verbal or writing...no, right? also, not all of us are "fluent"..we are second generation or "abc" american born chinese..not immigrants. i guess taking SATII chinese can show that u still make an effort to speak/ understand the language..not all american born chinese ppl speak chinese either..jsut some thoughts

atlantiz, I completely agree with your reasoning.

atlantiz - CR and W don't measure English the way the SAT II measures languages. It's reasoning vs. basic knowledge. After all, the SAT is supposed to measure everything you've learned in school, whereas the SAT II is supposed to measure how much you learned in one class (usually).

Tanman: Thanks for the chart!

theoneo, it's pretty hard to reason something when you don't understand the context of how it is used due to a language problem.
