What scores should I send?

Hey CC,

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I wanted to get a more personal answer so that I make an appropriate decision.

I was fortunate enough to receive a 36 on the ACT this September, and wanted to know if I should only submit this score for college applications (provided the colleges in question allow score choice). While I'm happy with the score thus far (writing hasn't come in yet), I have heard that some colleges prefer the SAT over the ACT since it is easier to distinguish students with on a 2400 point scale than a 36 point scale or something along those lines. However, my SAT was relatively weak; I have a 2240 / 2270 superscored. Should I send both my SAT and ACT scores, or just my ACT? I will most likely not write another ACT/SAT.

I also heard that colleges like to see an upward trend in test scores. I took an ACT this June and got a 34, should I send this in too to show my score increase? Or should I stop being silly, keep it simple, and just send in my 36?

ACT score breakdown; most recent to least recent:
Comp 36: 36 E, 35 M, 36 R, 36 S; writing not yet in (expected 7-11, although I'm pretty horrendous at predicting scores)
Comp 34: 36 E, 33 M, 35 R, 32 S, 10W (34 combined E/W)

SAT score breakdown; most recent to least recent:
Comp 2240: 710 CR, 760 M, 800 W (10 Essay)
Comp 2240: 710 CR, 760 M, 770 W (10 Essay)

College list: HYSM, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UChicago, Caltech, UT Austin

Side note: Sorry if I sound overly naïve; I'm the first member of my family to attend school in the US so this whole college apps thing can get really confusing. I'm talking to my counselor about this too; however, my school is freaking enormous so I have to wait a couple days before I can get a meeting with her - so I thought I'd ask you guys first :) .

I hope I’m not too late, but I suggest you send both your SAT/ACT as you have competitive scores on both standardized tests. Also, I don’t believe that an upward trend in test scores is significant (unlike high school grades), so you’re better off sending your 36.

As an aside, did you participate in RSI this past summer? If not, how did you spend it?
