What set of ACT scores are better?

I took the ACT twice and I got the following scores:

Test 1:
Composite: 32
English: 33
Math: 30
Reading: 33
Science: 33
Combined English and Writing: 32 (Writing: 10)

Test 2:
Composite: 33
English: 32
Math: 30
Reading: 34
Science: 34
Combined English and Writing: 29 (Writing: 8)

Which test is better for my college applications? Is the fact that my writing skills seemed lacking on my 2nd test a major deal breaker? Which is the better test to report?

Most colleges use the composite score.

Generally colleges won’t factor in a writing score of 7-10; only especially low and especially high scores are looked at. Go with test 2.

Test two. First of all, the composite score is higher. Second, its not as if your writing score is terrible anyhow. (I was looking at percentiles on the writing scores and its something like only 2% of people get a 10 or above, so an 8 definitely won’t hurt you). Of all scores, writing is typically considered the least (with SATs, a lot of times colleges will actually only look at the CR and math sections).

I contacted UChicago and Notre Dame admissions about this question. (two colleges I’m applying to) UChicago said they superscore anyway, so send both, and Notre Dame said they just look at composite score and not writing. Thanks for all the help!
