Hey,
Was just wondering if the veterans here could give some advice to the Juniors going into Senior year after this summer. What should we be doing? Reasearch? Maybe get a headstart on those essays? Any pointers and regrets that people have would you mind sharing?
Thanks!

I'm planning to do some research as well as internships. If I have time, I will volunteer...and of course, start on your application

You can try to get a job and fix up any part of your application that you aren't satisfied with (eg. SAT marks

I am working at a laboratory conducting research on epilepsy. Im also going to work on a political campaign for NYC mayor, so my summer is pretty busy.

Oh ye, get started on those essays and applications, especially if you're doing Early Decision, which i am.

im traveling to poland and china!

Since we're on that topic, im leaving to tan my arse off in Florida tomorrow morning!! woohoo! (Im from gloomy NY), and im going to the Dominican Republic to tan my arse off there too, next month!

Im gonna miss being on CC for a whole 9 days!

Working, so they won't think of me as 'just another rich girl'
Luckily, I really enjoy the work.
:)
Here's one thing NOT to do - a cushy 'eco trip' to some tropical island, where yu'll do 'community service'. LOL so many of my friends do this and think itll look good...wrong!

Agree with filmxoxo. I've just read "Winning the Heart of the College Admissions Dean" (which was very good, and helpful) and it said that those eco-trips and community service abroad things just make you look like you're rich enough to be able to afford it...

Which brings me to a question. I'm Chinese, and many friends and relatives still love in China. Through those connections, I've been teaching English during the summers and will be doing that next summer as well. Would that be looked @ in the same way as teh community-service-abroad-makes-you-look-rich activities?

i'm still going to do it, even if the answer if is yes, but i was just curious about it...

No way, your activity is genuine and I'm sure they'll be able to see that.

Jai, you should look for some easy scholarships and begin starting on those. The more scholarships you enter, the greater chance you have of winning some money, right? So use all this summer time to get a head start. I have a friend who applied to 20 scholarships. She's not much, but she actually won 2 and now has 5k to her name. Now, you're a CC kid. Maybe you can win even more.

Also, you should visit which ever school is on your top 3 list (if you have one yet) if you have time and money. I think the earlier you decide which school you want to go to and apply to, the less stress you have.

So start working on those essays. You should be closer to stress-free than the rest of your friends when school starts. :)

I also think working should be included if you want. If you want extra money, get a job. Or community service. It should be something that you enjoy, though. You can't be writing essays AND doing something else you hate. That's just not a sane way to spend your summer!

I am interning for a congressman in D.C.

1) Three part-time jobs (one involving one of my main passions)
2) Training for crew season
3) Getting a drivers license

I'm volunteering in a pharmacy, going to debate camp, and studying for SATIIs. FUN :P

UH OK yeah. no one I know did internships and big state work before they were even seniors in high school. Please..what an ass kissing thing to do. I think the most accurate answer to your question would be..make lists of schools you like, visit what you can, write your main essay (especially if you will be usig the common app), find out what schools accept the common app, look into financial aid possibilities, set aside time for doing each application, decide how many schools you will apply to, write you guidance counselor if you have questions..or keep checking back on this board!

im sure lots of high schoolers do internships over the summer

ceruleanne: doing internships before you're a senior is SO not an 'ass-kissing thing to do'. you get a head-start and get to see what working is actually like. yeah, colleges like it, and i suppose that that's what you're referring to as ass-kisisng, but it's also such a great opportunity to do something that you normally can't do.

I didn't know they had internships for high schoolers. I guess things have changed since the late 90's, early 2000's

S is doing some traveling with us (his parents) and then staying by himself for a month in a cabin in the mountains to train for his sport. He will then attend a one week sports camp. No job- maybe someday......

I'm working at a summer camp, full time job. I have done internships the past two Januarys as part of my school's program. One with a congresswoman, the other at a Children's Museum in Manhattan.

I'm going to try and get a job at the library. I hate retail jobs (already had one last year) and the library is so nice and quiet... yeah I'm hoping for it to save some money, but not really counting on it 100%

I'm also going to try and get a volunteer position (that sounds weird, but I don't know if they need any, really) at a local hospital in their children's center. Also going to volunteer for Special Olympics (did last summer) and at a nonprofit resale shop where all profits are donated to a shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Then also going college visiting to TONS of campuses since I'm so indecisive... and definitely getting those essays done before school starts. I tend to get hyper during the school year (i.e. no free time what-so-ever) and I'd like to only worry about editting and organizing the apps, not starting them.
