When deciding what major you should pick should you pick a major because you are really passionate about it? Or should you pick a major that is more likely to get you a job out of college? Any answers will be much appreciated.

If the two are exclusive, major in what you’re passionate about. For most fields, getting a job is all about networking and building a desirable skill set, not your major. If you’re passionate about your major (and thus your field), then it will be easier to network and get related work experience.

But be practical too, if possible. If theater is your major but you want to be a Computer Scientist, don’t major in Theater. There are other ways to incorporate your passion into your college experience without making it a major. Generally, don’t major into something too far off from what you actually want to do for a career (especially STEM careers; exception is pre-health (not Nursing) where the only requirement is a Bachelor’s).

When you’re at the very beginning of your college career, it’s easy to think that you won’t get any jobs if you don’t have the right major. But you should only be worried if you’re completely undecided. Because after that, there’s only one kind of job you’re trying to get, so the majors that may be the most “practical” might not be for the career you want.

*If theater is your passion, lol

In my opinion, you should major in something that will get you the job or put you on the career path that you want. And you can pick that job based on all sorts of criteria–what you really want to do, the salary you want, the lifestyle you want, the type of work you want to do, the population you want to work with, etc.

It depends. For example, if you have a passion for math or economics, then you have a major can not only lead to a good job but can also satisfy your passion. If you have a passion, say, for art history or theology, you will probably have some difficulty finding a decent job. But the thing about that is getting a job with a marketable major is that it doesn’t keep you from pursuing your passion. You can always minor in the field that that satisfies your passion.
