Hey guys,

Just like many of you cruising around CC, I'm an incoming freshman who is packing for this fall at NYU. I will be living in Rubin, a traditional style dorm. Besides the basic necessities of living, I'm very curious to seek suggestions from you of some items that you found extremely useful (ie: printer, microwave, etc).

Thank you all in advance!

just don't overpack. leave all your clothes at home; chances are you'll come to the city and never want to wear the clothes you brought from home ever again.

stressed0ut:

Printer is helpful, but not essential - you can get free printing at the ITS labs, but you will have to coordinate your schedule to make sure you can print and still get to class on time.

I couldn't have lived without my microwave and mini-fridge during freshman year.

micheeatsfish: LOL!

Did you just buy a whole new wardrobe when you got to NYU? :) How did your first year go?

haha well i was exaggerating a bit, but not too much. During winter break, I pretty much packed all the clothes that I didn't even wear that I brought with me home again. And then when I moved out, I took all my clothes that I never wear (again) and sold it to Beacon's Closet. I'm from CA so I had to buy a lot of coats and winter clothing in NY anyways, but yea...I did kind of accumulate a lot of new clothing.

my first year was great! loved second semester! but seriously though, i didn't think making friends was going to get this hard...

What room of rubin? and what floor. That will play a role in what I'll tell you. Bring a printer, the last thing you want to do after staying up till 6 am is go out to a computer lab. Pack light, I didn't need/never used a microwave. If you ever need something there will be 10 places walking distance from rubin that sell it.

micheeatsfish: why do you say you didnt think itd be so hard to make friends???

money, lots and lots of money

haha, bloomster. very true.

personally, my printer saved me as did my fridge and microwave. and overpacking clothing is, like miche said, pointless. i wore about half of what i packed (but i did only go shopping in ny once for clothes, and it was the end of the year, haha). if you "think" you'll wear it...don't pack it. also don't overpack shoes. easy mistake, being a girl and all.

something one of my friends who goes to school out of school taught me a little secret - things like desk chairs (i assume nyu has standard uncomfortable wood chairs), EBAY is your friend. you can get decent chairs for less than $40 shipped.

speaking of which, i'm a transfer and i haven't gotten any housing/meal information from nyu. do you have to call in to get info early? or is it because im a transfer

wait..we're allowed to bring our own desk chairs??

We are? I didn't think we were. I mean if you brought you own chair, where would you put the chair that NYU put in your room?

the chairs aren't that uncomfortable...really, not uncomfortable at all. if your THAT picky about a chair...

don't spend money you don't need to on furniture items (other than maybe a file cabinet, small stacking shelfs, etc. which don't count as furniture)

you are NOT allowed to bring extra furniture (and even if you did, you would have no place for it)

Hahah you guys are awesome!

I'm not sure which floor I'll be living in, but the room will be shared by three girls total. How is the lighting? Do I need to bring some lamps?

wait a second, we aren't allowed to bring furniture =\ ? I thought I saw people with computer chairs in their rooms at nyu (is this a general rule or certain dorms)

then again, NYU hasn't sent me any housing info so i'm in the dark =(

well, a chair is the easiest thing to get into your room w/o being too obvious. plus, it all depends on whether your RA actually checks your room or even writes you up. my RA never even check my room so i could have had a sofa if I wanted (but didn't...because it is of course pointless and there was no room.)

stressed out: The lighting is fine. I had a reading lamp next to my bed, but otherwise no extras. And if you have LC housing, then your in a triple (which means one room, three people) and if you don't have LC housing then your in a one of the corner rooms which have a larger section to fit in an extra third person. They are quite nice. I think the bathrooms may be a little bigger as well, but I can't remember well enough...

eh..i was in hayden for orientation i thought the lighting in the room was obnoxious..im deft bringing my own

anyone know if we could bring a hot plate? and what about throw cushions to put on the floor

you aren't going to get in trouble for a hot plate or cushions...

yea lighting, i forgot
seriously, it helps so much. if i could bring one thing, probably my bed side bedable duck-neck lamp that you attach to your bed. Used it so much. Forget printer, microwave, clothing--- BRING YOUR LAMPS GUYS

i meant *bendable NOT BED-ABLE.
