What Should I Bring to My Alumni Interview?

I was contacted about a week ago by my local Midd alum. We have scheduled the interview for this Saturday at a local Starbucks. I was just wondering what I should wear (I’m female) and also if I should bring a resume or anything.

I have her email so I could easily ask her about either, I just don’t want to look silly.

Also an idea of questions to expect would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

You can dress fairly casual for a Starbucks alumni interview. No need for dress or suit. If you want you can bring a summary of your accomplishments but it would be very rare for an alumni interviewer to want it. Have you had a chance to visit Middlebury yet? Don’t be too nervous, the purpose of an alumni interview is just to get another impression of you as an applicant and to do PR on behalf of Middlebury. You should have coherent answers to “why Middlebury” and “tell me about yourself.” I don’t know about Middlebury in particular, but normally the interviewer is given only a very cursory overview of your background like where you go to high school, what you want to major in and what extracurricular activities you do. They do not “read” your application or anything like that. In fact this would defeat the purpose of the interview as it is intended to be a 2nd objective perspective unencumbered by what’s in your file

I just had my interview today for Middlebury. The lady was super nice. She asked a lot of questions about why I wanted to attend Middlebury, so make sure you have a good answer for that one, and a couple of reasons. Don’t stress about it or be nervous- it really was a conversation and was very relaxed. My interviewer also asked me to bring a resume, and the majority of the time was me describing the activities and such. My interview lasted an hour and 15 minutes, however, from a lot of research that I’ve done, the average is 20-30 minutes.

Keep an eye on the weather. If you’re in the Northeast, we’re due to get a Nor’easter Saturday. If you don’t get snowed out, know dress appropriately and allow lots of time.

Do not dress formally or TOO casually. You want to not be remembered for what you wear. I would bring a resume if you have one (print it off of Naviance?). Bring it in a manila folder and do not offer it until the end of the interview. The interviewer can then use it to jog his/her memory, but it does not become the agenda for the meeting (like if you pull it out first thing).

Relax. Enjoy the conversation.

I ended up emailing my interviewer. She told me to go ahead and bring the resume and ultimately used it to guide the conversation. I wore khakis, a blank shirt, and a maroon cardigan and was dressed appropriately as she wore a sweater and jeans. The interview was actually really fun - it lasted just under an hour and she told me at the end that I would be a great fit for Middlebury. I ultimately got accepted and have officially enrolled!
