What should I do if a Non-Custodial Parent's Statement is required but...?

...but am no longer in contact with my non custodial parent?
Could I just not submit one?

Thanks in advance. :)

If no one in your extended family has any knowledge of how to get ahold of your parent then you’ll need to fill out a waiver to request being exempted. Read each college website for details on the form and what documentation is required. You will need either your other Parent’s information or you will need to ask the college to waive the requirement. If you simply exclude one parent it could result in not being evaluated for financial aid because you have an incomplete file.

Thank you!

Stephanie, it is NOT that easy to get a non-custodial parent waiver from a college. It’s not enough that YOU have not had contact with your non-custodial parent. If there is child support or spousal support being provided OR the whereabouts of this person IS known by others, you will not necessarily qualify for a NCP waiver. These are granted on a case by case basis at the schools.

Keep in mind also that you will likely have to reapply for this waiver annually. If the circumstances change in any way…NCP makes contact for example, you may find that you are not granted a waiver for future years.

As pointed out above, you cannot simply omit the NCP Profile if the school requires it. You can request a waiver, but you really should have a plan if this is not granted.

Make sure there are FAFSA only schools and schools that do NOT require the Non-custodial parent Profile on your application list.

When my daughter settled on a school last year, we filed a special form the college provided if people wanted to explain ‘extenuating circumstances’ and I sent them a copy of all the papers proving that I had always had total physical/legal custody of my daughter/that child support was ending/that we had no contact. They accepted that for the ‘waiver’ so that I didn’t have to pursue the father when we had no contact with him for a very, very long time. The colleges you are applying to for financial aid packages may have that type of form if you have the documentation. I was grateful to the college for giving me the chance to file that paperwork on behalf of my teen’s case. Good luck with the ‘non-custodial parent’ paperwork!

There is enough anecdotal evidence on this forum that colleges vary. The OP will need to ask each school what policies and documentation are needed. The OP must file waivers with each Profile school. I agree OP, I hope you have one or two FAFSA only colleges you can afford on your list.

lawrencemom, you requested a waiver of tne NCP Profile and it sounds like YOUR schools granted it based on the information you provided them. It is possible that the OP has sufficient info for a waiver and it is possible that he/she does not. We have no way of knowing.

Just not having contact with the NCP is not always sufficient. If the OP’s family receives child suppport or spousal support, or the NCP has other contacts with folks, the OP may not get the waiver…and maybe he/she will. The only way to know is to request the waiver.

I still say…the OP should have other options just in case the schools do NOT provide the waiver.

agreed, thumper1
