What should I do in high school to better prepare for Brown?

Currently, I’m only a sophomore going in to junior year, but I’ve been intensively researching schools. Brown is currently my top choice. I know it’s EXTREMELY competitive and chances are unlikely for basically anyone, but I want your opinion. What’s most important to do in high school to improve a person’s chances?

My GPA as of now is not so stellar, but by application time I expect it to be at a competitive level. I’m in all AP/advanced classes. I’ve been in band my entire middle/high school career and I currently hold a leadership position in it, and I’ve made it to state levels on my instrument. (There’s no national level, so basically as high as you can go.) Also, I’ve joined academic decathlon, which I find fun, but a craaazy amount of work.

I know the best thing to do is something significant and extraordinary - which I’m definitely working on. But what would you say I could be doing now (or improving upon the things I’m doing now) that could help my chances a bit?

Also, how much do the essays factor in to admissions? Thanks in advance. (:

I’ve heard that moving to Wisconsin helps…

The OP lives in New Mexico – that’s about as good, possibly better, than Wisconsin.

Just keep doing what you love. Work to get the highest possible grades junior year. Develop close relationships with a couple of teachers so you can get great recommendations.

And essays are very important. But you should be concentrating on your classes and the activities you enjoy now; worry about college applications later.

Hey, I’m from Wisconsin! I was waitlisted by the way and still waiting to here if I got in or not.

fireandrain is right, just keep doing what you like doing. If you don’t know what that is, then look for it. Keeping grades super high and getting to know teachers well are also important, but showing that you do what you do is what’ll get you to stand out.
