What should I do in High School?

Hello everybody, i am an incoming high school freshman. I just wanted to know what i should do in high school to get into good colleges, this year i am taking two AP classes (biology and human geography) and i am also going to be on the junior varsity tennis team (only for one year, im not that good at all XD). I want to be a dentist like my mom....what volunteer work and extracurricular activities should i do? i also took a diagnostic SAT and got a 2030..thanks a lot!

I don’t think AP Bio is a good idea for freshman year.

You should ask your mom what she did!

yeah my moms from india i would have asked her though

What colleges do you have in mind?

You shouldn’t really do any specific ECs or volunteer work. Try joining a few here and there that grab your attention or sound like you may enjoy them. If you do, then try to get more involved in these activities throughout high school. Don’t join something you don’t like just for the sake of putting it on your app. You don’t want to waste your time doing something you’re not interested in when there’s better oppurtunities out there that you might like. As for being a dentist, maybe you can try job shadowing at wherever your mother works to get a better idea of what the job is like.

thanks for the advice…colleges in mind? well, i kinda wanna major in biochemistry…thats what my friends dad did, hes a dentist…and my mom went to boston university for dental school…but honestly i dont know. the first college i had in mind was probably ut austin, but im not sure about their biochemistry program.

also, does not being in athletics have an effect on me?

That’s completely fine, you still have a lot of time to think about it.

Since you’re interested in biochemistry, it might be a good idea to check out your school’s science club or science olympiad if they have one.

I don’t think not being in a sport would have any significant effect on you. If you decide that you like tennis and want to continue it throughout high school then that’s great but if not, okay. Not every one is meant to play a sport in high school or even in general and that’s okay.

also i have some stuff already; for example i am a charity performer (i do breakdancing and ticket sales go to charity); i’ve done about a hundred hours worth…i just wanted to know whats worth putting on my resume

It’s usually the stuff you did in high school that counts. If you enjoyed doing that, then try and continue it in high school.

all right…thx for all the help!

I suggest picking things that you truly like and stick with them. Colleges like to see that you have a passion for something rather than a list of random activities that you think will make yourself look good.

Don’t take biology as a freshman, you’re going to get a poor score on the exam as it is arguably the hardest AP. If you want a science then take AP Environmental, it’s a lot tamer.
