What should I do mathwise?

Ok, so I'm currently a sophomore in Alg 2/Trig. Quite boring and easy, so I decided to take precalculus over the summer.

Sadly, we have IB, not AP. With IB I would be taking HL 1 Math junior year, then HL 2 senior year.

However, with taking Precalc I do have enough knowledge to be in a calculus class, and the only other one we offer is Math SL II. I looked at their curriculum, I can do that now.

There also is the free online option that enabled me to take precalculus.

This has AP Calc AB and AP Calc BC. I plan on taking AP Calc AB online next year, and BC senior year.

The main problem is, I don't know whether to take precalc and HL 1, or precalc then jump to SL 2?

bump 10char

bump************

If HL 1,2 is the same as IB Math 3/4, then do that.

There is no reason to take Calc AB and Calc BC, just take Calc BC.

Most of the people I knew took Calc sophomore year than 3/4, but some took Math SL and then Calc senior year.

I bet you could do HL and then take Calc BC senior year while taking HL 2.

well, HL 1 is considered Precalculus at my school, while working on stuff for HL 2.

HL 2 is the calculus course, with a few added extras.
Thing is, I’m gonna be done with Precalc, and I already know the HL 1 Stuff thanks to a textbook.

bump 10char I really need to make a decision

whoa whoa whoa…i don’t get it…my school doesn’t offer Math HL 1 or HL 2…they just offer studies, SL, or HL…i regretted that I didn’t take HL…from your description, HL 2 is the Calculus course right? just take it…it’s really easy…i decided to take SL, and before i even started class, i saw an HL book, read it, and understand everything…just take the highest math HL they offer, you won’t regret it…You’re hoping MIT right? then Math HL 2 would be the right choice…if you’re worried about pre-calc, just take some online lesson from a UC-Berkeley Extension, or BYU

Just to clarify,
HL 1 is the first year of the HL math Sequence.
HL 2 is the second year of the HL Math sequence.

I’m already signed up to take Precalc over the summer,

My main question is should I still do HL 1 then HL 2, or just do SL 2 then HL 2 as some juniors next year will do

I suggest you take abstract algebra.

linear algebra is so easy, do calculus or whatever it’s called HL

Linear algebra is easy.

Here’s the rules that I have to follow

I can only take the HL 2 IB exam Senior year.
All HL IB Courses are 2 year Courses.
So Junior year, I would take HL 1, then HL 2 senior year.
HL 1 is nothing but precalc, which I know from self-study, and what I will know from summer school this summer.

By taking precalc, I’m technically able to skip into SL 2, but I can do the SL work right now without a problem.

So I don’t know whether to go into HL 1 or SL 2.

take my advice and go for HL…universities only give credits for HL courses…and i think you’d do well in HL 1…it’s more solid when AdComs see you Taking both HL classes in junior year and senior year

good luck

Just chill out this summer, man; go play some Modern Warfare 2, discover some new mutagens, drink some lemonade, start your college essays, sip on some tea, get some, and chillax!

ah modern warfare 2, maybe.

^@ BrownPennLover.

Thanks, I’ll take HL 1 Junior Year.

You really shouldn’t take Calc AB and Calc BC. Calc BC covers all of Calc AB so it’s really useless. You should just take Calc BC your junior year, and then take Calc 3 + differential calculus your senior year.

I don’t know if your schoo lets you independent study for different subjects, but I took independent studied Calc BC and stat my freshman year, self studied Calc 3& differential calculus my sophomore year, a mix of linear algebra and number theory my junior year, and now I’m learning discrete mathematics and it’s been worthwhile.

I digress. The point it that if you can, and you want to challenge yourself, Calc BC can be done in one semester, and then you can learn Calc 3 in your junior year. This frees up a lot of options for senior year, where you could take diff calc or linear algebra or complex analysis/real analysis or a ton of other math.

^Wow you’re really good at math

^^ That would be amazing, if my school wasn’t a strict IB ■■■■■■■. Calc BC is an online course in my state, and I can ask my Guidance Counselor to change that in the fall.

That was a side addendum to my main IB Question.

Take Precalc and go into SL 2, or take precalc, go into HL 1, then HL 2 Senior year while taking Diff Eqs and Linear algebra. (Linear Algebra 1st). BC is going to be taken next year though.

Oympiad stuff! Calc BC is cookbook mathematics that you could teach a 12-year-old, same with Diff Eqs. Linear Algebra is only difficult if you do it from Axler.

USAMO and IMO actually require mathematical skill and don’t require any knowledge of higher mathematics, so they are the best things for intellegent high school kids.

That stuff I’m doing in my free time. If they ever offered a class on it, I would be the first to sign up. So for fun, I’m buying the books to practice.

Yeah, sure but there is no general USAMO/IMO question. There are so many things that you can be tested on, so the only real way to study is to really understand math and number theory. I don’t think studying for the AMC/AIME/USAMO/IMO is as worthwhile as actually taking a math class. Even stat was a good class even though it was so easy. You shouldn’t take Linear Algebra before taking diff equations. I felt like I could do a lot more advanced Linear Algebra because I had such a good background in calculus.
