I am an international student currently on OPT seeking employment. Two weeks ago I received an offer from a company I interviewed with for a position that I always wanted. They gave me a salary and a start date. The interview process went for two months and all this time they didn't know that I am international and need visa sponsorship (even though I clearly stated it on my application). After giving me a verbal offer found out about my sponsorship and told me they have to discuss it further and decide if they will sponsor me or not:( They told me that a week ago and I haven't heard from them since.
Meanwhile, today I received an offer from another company for a position that starts in two weeks where they know I am international. I told them my situation and they said they will contact me back later this week. The first position is like my dream job and the second one I am not crazy about. But if the first one fell through I don't want to be unemployed either. Both are fortune 100 companies and are very reputable. What should I do?

Also, should I call the first company and tell them about the second offer? Is it discrimination to rescind an offer due to sponsorship? (also, I told them I have work permit until 2015 so I won’t need sponsorship until then)

I love the first company and really really want that job.

Well, to my knowledge, top 100 fortune companies will definately give sponsorship. They don’t care this money

Are you sure? That’s what I thought too but don’t know what they are discussing for so long then. There revenue last year just in my department was more than 2 billion so why would they be stingy for like $5000-8000. I need it in two years anyway.

I would call the first company and let them know about your second offer, and ask them when they will be able to provide you with a response. If they cannot give you an answer before you need to notify the second company of your decision, then I would accept the offer at the second company to ensure employment. Sometimes companies just need a nudge and if they know you have other opportunities, and they really want you, they’ll pick up their feet.

I am just scared that if I told them I have another offer they would be like, ok we don’t want you anymore!

The reason is not only about money. If a company sponsor you, they take the risk for not laying you off for many years. Some companies keep changing rules, like JP Morgan and BOA. It really varies by company, what are those two companies?

So what if they say that? If they aren’t getting back to you in time to make a decision on the other offer, you’re risking not having a job at all, or you’ll end up with the other offer anyway. It’s about wording - be polite, let them know you’re calling to see if they had any updates on your status. If not, let them know that you have received another offer, but would love to work with company A. Ask if they are able to get back to you within a reasonable time so that you know how to proceed.
