What should I do? Significantly dropped on SAT?

I took the SAT in March and got a 1980 (CR: 640, M: 640, W: 700) without studying. I took it again in May and studied this time but I dropped to a 1920 (CR: 620, M: 670, W: 630). I felt a lot more confident taking it a second time. I think i'm going to get my score verified.

Should I take it again a third time? Would that look bad to colleges? I really wanted to go to UChicago or Cornell...

If you really want to go to Chicago or Cornell, it would make sense to take it again, unless you have absolutely stellar EC’s or other parts of the application. And besides, I think most colleges don’t care if someone takes it 3 times, but I think it’s the maximum.

there’s no need to take it third time…
the collages you mentioned allow students to combine the scores,
you can use CR 640 M 670 W700 and get a score over 2000.

or you could give your last try on it …if you have time

I also wanted to go for Johns Hopkins. I am an IB student with all A’s except for one B. I’m from Kansas so being in an obscure area helps me a little. I’m heavily involved in music–piano and violin. So hopefully? I could take it again in October but I am debating over whether that will look bad or not.

If that’s what you’re debating on, it might help if I told you that colleges seldom think it looks bad if they see a student with a dogged determination to do well on something. Unless it’s some outrageous number (>5), I think you would do well to give it another go for your own mental satisfaction that you maximized your score.
