Hey everyone…im currently a high school freshman so i still have time before i apply to colleges but because of that i owuld like to ask for some advice…these are my current states for my freshman year and i’d like to ask for some advice on what i should do to increase my chances at getting into brown…or any other ivy league school for that matter…

GPA: 3.947…got straight A’s as my final Grades
All Honors classes

EC:
part time job as a waitress at a senior citizens’ community
Key Club
Student Council
Big Brother Big Sister
Science League
Butler Police Department Citizen’s Advisory Committee
People to People Future Leader’s Summit on law in the summer of 2006

I am interested in pursuing a career in law and in place of a “regular” high school i attend a Law & Public Safety academy…this means that i take a law class for two periods a day and have “special” english and history classes…they are higher level classes but because of them i cant take ap english/history…

in my senior year i will be attending Morris County College to start a criminal justice degree and hope to transfer to a different school after that year…

Do something unique that also has something to do with what you want and who you are. For instance, I had a friend who did an AMAZING science research project one summer, but they were a prospective econ/IR major and really weren't that interested in science, it just sort of worked out that they got involved in this project (long story). It ended up helping them zero getting into college. On the other hand, if you were interested in IR and did something amazing with that, it would help advertise you.

..i organized a benefit dance at my school raising over 1000 dollars to help a drug rehabilitation center....and got my teacher to make this a tradition so we've got another one coming this year...i kinda fiugred that showed a lot of initiative and ability to get sponsors work with people, etc but idk if it's gonna help at all....

Really, the best thing to do is to chill out and enjoy high school. Do what you are passionate about because you want to do it and would do even if no college would find out. You'll be happier, it will be more honest, and it will come through in the application.

It's unhealthy to be so narrowly focused so soon. Things change. People change. Just live your life and do what makes you happy and the pieces will fall into place in time for whatever the winds of fate have planned. You should ask yourself, Why do I want to go to an Ivy?

i know why i want to an ivy...no point discussing it now....the reason i asked what to do is that we may tell ourselves that all we should do is enjoy life and that will get us into a university....but the reality is, it wont....schools look for a certain academic and extra-curricular standards in its students.....and i dont want to end up being one of the people that post here in their senior year asking about their chances to get into a certain school....cause it's too late then...instead im asking now so that i can do whatever i can to make sure i wouldnt have to worry about getting into my top choice schools once the time comes....

..and as far as being so narrow...i do have other interests that i tend to...i did in the past and will in the future....but i like law and attending the academy (which is located at the same school i would go to anyway) gives me a chance to explore it before i spend thousands of dollars on a university...it's actually quite useful.....especially since i still have all the subjects of a regular high shcool student...

Listen, broseph. I think you're wrong in that supposition that colleges want "standard extra curriculars". Sure, good grades are crucial and expected, but what colleges want to see is a pursued passion. If you think being in a myriad of clubs will get you in, (I think) you're mistaken. HOOK is the keyword here, bro.

I do music; I have district/county/region/state honors, I take a jazz course at the performing arts center, I play gigs to earn money, I'm hittin' Brown this summer for (guess what) a music course, and I'm in a bunch of bands (school and community related). I'm also establishing a community service organization to give lessons to middle school kids by high school kids (I just need a catchy acronym). But to tell you the truth, I'm not in a lot of extraneous "random" clubs, because I honestly think it's a waste of my time if I'm not into it.

But the big thing I'm (hopefully) trying to get across is that in doing this semi-impressive music hook, I've ENJOYED MYSELF THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL!!!!

So, ok back to you, 'wisened froshman the great'. Get good grades, find a passion, pursue it, have fun, and don't go to a college for it's name; rather, a college that you fit into. This is from a normal dude that has lived through an equilibrium of all aspects of high school life: from studying/hating life to partying/singing my joy to the world.

(plus Moat2Moat said to enjoy yourself and he's in Brown, so I'm stickin with him)

there's a difference in standard extra-curriculars and extra curricular standards....so i think u took what i wrote wrong.,...and btw...y do u guys think im not enjoying myself?....

Because thinking about, and seemingly obessing, over college in 9th grade, and planning out your next four years in order to impress an Adcom board rather than just doing what you love and seeing what happens doesn't seem like fun to me. It seems highly stressful.

...u got a point....i feel that it is better and in the long run actually less stressful to make clear what i want to do and where i want to go now and prepare for it rather than ending up being one of the senior who post their stats and ask for their chances at a point where there is absolutely nothing they can do...plus i find it interesting to look at all the schools find out what the good and bad things are....highs school is great but being able to at last pick what u want to learn about to be more on you own, be a step closer to the real world.....i find that to be extremely appealing....
