What Should I do to gain admission into UT Austin?

I'm a junior about to be a senior this year, and I was wondering what I could do to improve my chances at UT Austin especially in it's business school.

Here are my stats:
My SAT scores were a 1800.
Reading+Math:1240
Weighted GPA:4.37
Rank:3
AP Classes taken:5
EC:Volunteered at Habitats for Humanity, Served in the FAITH program, Area Vice President of HOSA, Tennis(next year)

I've heard some people were able to get into McComb's with an 1140 SAT score. Also, the admission sat average for 2004 was 1300 and UT does not seriously care about the writing portion of the SATs. So it looks like I don't have to try terribly hard on that test. I've only taken it once and don't want to take it again because I want to apply for the September admission date which is before the next test I can take. I heard there is a bonus in early applicant as well.

As for EC, UT doesn't seem to emphasize it as much or at all. I'm not very active in this area because I think many of the clubs are a waste of time in my school. However, I hear that they respect a person with an officer position more than they would a person in several clubs. Hopefully my focus on AP classes can make up for this slack. I'm planning to take 5 AP classes next year of which 4 of them I'm actually going to AP test on.

I hope I can get into McCombs in UT. I would really like to graduate there with their first tier MBA and their insured good job when I get out.

Well, you're in at UT by the top 10% rule. You'd probably want to retake the SAT to have a better shot at McCombs. Someone may have gotten in with an 1140, but they're an exception. Also, if you don't get into McCombs straight outta high school, you can transfer internally which isn't too difficult to do.

Thank you for your time in reading my long post. I'm glad you gave me some though of improving my chances. Looking at some of your solutions, I would probably internally transfer into McCombs but not as a final choice. However, I really don't want to take the SATs again. As for the person who made the 1140, I am confused at why the school would let him in since he has no exceptional qualities(not to be rude) unless a family member of his died in that school. Odd.

He may have had a very strong essay or unique, business focused ECs. If he truly had nothing exceptional, he may have just been lucky ;). But the general rule is, most people don't get into McCombs with that low of an SAT. Yours isn't very low really as the average SAT for admitted students was a 1300 last year. <a href="http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/udean/admissions/freshprofile.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/udean/admissions/freshprofile.asp</a></p>

How big is your graduating class. Your sat's are very low for mccombs, and I know people with a 100+ points hire M+R and didn't even get into UT as undeclared. The only thing you can hope for is they do it by rank, since you have no other real pushing factors besides that.

In my North Garland High School, my class has around 540 people.

Alright, thank you for your statistics brand_182. I am glad that you think that my SAT scores are not that low. My brother who went to McCombs saids it's not too much to worry about, but I needed a second opinion and maybe a third.

Hey foxshox, how sure are you on that SAT scores? What you say frightens me. It would really suck to have to wait year in college to get into McCombs.

if you're instate and your ranks that high, dont worry about it because mccombs fills 75% of its class by the highest rank. so, they take the top 1% and then the top 2% and so on. basically, since you are in the top 1% you are a direct admit, so SAT's arent really looked at. if you want to apply to the business honors program, you should definately higher your sat score and have leadership positions and such because bhp looks heavily on everything. i cant say this will be the same next year for regular mccombs admission because the top 10% rule has changed for next year.

no actually it didn't change it was overruled i think

I thought it passed

I think there is now a cap to how many top 10% people UT can take. Since Schweizo is planning to apply early, he should get in to UT (not necessarily McCombs) because he is in the top 10%

<a href="http://www.statesman.com/news/conten...8/28top10.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.statesman.com/news/conten...8/28top10.html</a></p>

this says it didn't pass

If you are instate, then you are auto in. I'm assuming your class size is >100. <a href="http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/udean/admissions/freshman.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/udean/admissions/freshman.asp</a> Mccombs will auto accept based on rank.

Yeah your in based on rank, but damn I wish I went to your school, I would be like number 4. I am at 4.35 and I barely missed the top 100 of my class.

Sorry to be negative about this, but Honors is out of the question at McCombs. If you were lower in the top ten percent and not like number 3, you probably would have been admitted as undeclared.

ilovebusiness, i was not able to access that site...are you sure the url is right?

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=335211&page=3%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=335211&page=3</a> the last post on this thread has it copy and pasted out if your comp won't let you access the site

I noticed you stated that you wanted an MBA from McCombs. It's doubtful that you would be able to go directly from undergrad to the graduate business program. Top MBA programs require post-graduate work experience. UT requires at least 2 years, but the average amount of work experience is 5 years.

After all this talk, I'm going to retake the SATs as I can improve my scores after September. I'm in McComb's for sure as it seems, but I should be looking into the honors program. I am lost in what they expect in leadership abilities. Does anyone have a good idea about this? Well anyways, thanks for all your help guys.

Foxshox, what school do you come from. You do know that not all high schools are the same. That why they look more at your rank and sat scores and not purely GPA.
