I asked this in another thread but didn't really get any answers.

I've been accepted as an OOS freshman for UMich this year, but the costs are really way too high for me to afford. I've been thinking of going to my state school, University of Nevada Reno for a year or two and then transferring. What do they look for? And is it much harder to get into as a transfer? I want some tips on what I should do to prepare myself in order to maximize my chances.

my friend went to a state school in PA and had a 3.8-3.85 gpa and got accepted as a transfer this yr for politcal science…what would your major be

It’ll most likely be electrical engineering. I’m just worried that my GPA won’t be as great compared to my hs GPA which is a 3.85, 4.9w now and it’ll be a bad correlation…

I was just accepted to UM for Fall 09 transfer. My advice would be to enroll in the Honors College at UNR and aim for at least a 3.7 (preferably higher) GPA. Just do the best you can do. You may want to look at the requirements your prospective major at UM and try to fulfill as many prerequisites for it as you can during your time at UNR. I’ve been told UM is very stats-oriented so you want to try to maximize your GPA and test scores. Also, check your prospective college/school at UM to see if it has additional admissions requirements.

Thanks, I actually have been accepted to the honors program at UNR so I will definitely be doing that. Also when they say they want info about what extracurriculars you did, do they mean in high school or college?

gr2l, to answer your question about extracurriculars, I honestly don’t recall. I suppose it depends on how long you’ve been in college. At the time I completed the transfer apps, I’d only completed one semester of college and had only club hockey and an academic club related to my major (biochem) as college ECs. I’d say if you complete 2-3 full semesters by the time you apply to UM, you would concentrate on your college ECs and less on HS, unless you have some very significant HS ECs to list.

Yeah, I guess that would make sense. Thanks.

Also…does whatever semester you apply to, fall/spring have an effect on chances as well? or is there a certain time that’s better to apply since it’s rolling?

I have no idea whether you have a greater/lesser chance for admission during any given semester. You may want to post this over on the UM board, there’s a few transfer students who post regularly there and they’re really good about answering questions:
