Hi, I am currently attending West Virginia Wesleyan College as a freshman. This was a last choice school; I really didn't want to go in state, but now I am.

Anyway, I don't know what I should do as a degree. I really don't have much academic interest; I just want to be successful. High school was a breeze and I got 28 on the ACT. I have never excelled in any sports, even though I played them, except I did decent in wrestling (probably because I never played sports until high school).

The only things that interest me, that are good for my mind, are piano (which I only just recently started, and am not that good), history before 1800s, and learning foreign languages (I only kind of know French, haven't taken it since 10th grade). Politics kind of interest me but not really.

I absolutely love travelling.

I plan on taking French next semester and I am teaching myself some; I plan to learn more languages if I can.

What should I major in? What kind of jobs are out there that I would enjoy? I've looked around but found nothing. They say history majors and anthropology majors job outlook is really bad.

Have you thought about majoring in International Business/Relations or something of that sort? Your love for learning foreign languages could come in handy with that.

Usually for history and anthropology degrees, I think many of them become professors while doing research on the side and continue publishing studies (in order to make a living).

Otherwise, I really suggest you to just take some electives you find somewhat interesting and see where it goes. You’re only a freshman! Many people change majors multiple times. I actually began college as a bio major (just defaulted in going the “doctor” route because I thought it was safe) but I took some electives and realized I enjoyed other subjects more and changed my major. Many of my friends started as undecided but found their way through some electives and thinking as well!

If you love traveling, I feel like majoring in something international plus a language would benefit you as you could also do some semesters abroad with this!

If you think you might be interested in working for the government after college, check out their website about jobs. You can google it…They take people with lots of different majors, so you could do business, or history, and minor in languages. Study abroad for a semester or even a year if your schedule will allow it. Have you read “What Color is Your Parachute”? That book may help you figure out how to determine what you want to do later. A business background would never go to waste, that’s for sure…Start looking into clubs or part time jobs you never would have considered…you may be surprised and find a passion…Good luck!

Thank you, I will take many electives and see what interests me. What kind of jobs would be good for Int. Business or Int. Relations? And what about Int. Studies?

I’m puzzled as to how you know you like foreign languages if you’ve only taken some French thru 10th grade. Would think you would’ve kept taking it and other languages if you really enjoyed languages. You may wish to consider being an interpreter if you develop string fluency in several languages. Agree that taking classes in various fields and talking with your college placement office might be helpful to give some guidance.

If you like traveling - what about the military?

You’ll be in a new place every few years and could go to bases overseas. Does your school offer ROTC? The military will pay for your school and you’ll have an officer’s commission as soon as you graduate.
